Elon Musk’s Neuralink Chip Implanted in Second Patient

Elon Musk’s company Neuralink has successfully implanted its device into the brain of a second patient, Elon Musk announced in podcast American journalist Lex Friedman. Musk said that the operation went very well: “There are a lot of signals, a lot of electrodes,” the entrepreneur noted.

Musk also said in the podcast that the company plans to operate on a total of 10 patients this year.

The Neuralink device is a coin-sized microcomputer that is implanted in a person’s brain. It contains more than a hundred electrodes and is connected to the brain by wires, each of which is 10 times thinner than a human hair. The research is being conducted on people who are paralyzed due to injuries or neurological diseases. If the tests are successful, the chip should restore their ability to move or interact with computers at will.

The first Neuralink chip was implanted in February this year. The patient is a 29-year-old American man who was completely paralyzed after an accident. The patient learned to control the computer mouse cursor on the screen and play online chess “with the power of thought.”

More than a thousand volunteers with paralysis of all limbs have already signed up to participate in Neuralink trials.
