Hurricane Debby Track: Tropical Storm Forecast for New York City and the Tri-State Area
NEW YORK (WABC) — Debby made landfall in northern Florida as a Category 1 hurricane Monday morning and the tropical system could impact our weather later in the week.
Debby made landfall near Steinhatchee, a small northern Florida community of fewer than 1,000 people on Florida’s Gulf Coast. It had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (129 km/h) and was moving northeast at 11 mph (17 km/h), the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported.
It is now a tropical storm, with maximum winds around 65 mph.
The AccuWeather Eyewitness News team says that by mid- to late-week, tropical moisture may interact with a non-tropical storm to the Northeast. That interaction could result in excessive rainfall and flooding in areas to the north and west, far away or remote from the tropical formation itself.
The big question now is how far north Debby will head. One model is keeping most of the moisture to the south, but another model shows Debby quickly passing by a cold front that will block us and bring torrential rain on Friday and Saturday.
Debby was expected to stall over coastal regions of Georgia and South Carolina, lashing the region with possible record rainfall totaling up to 30 inches (76 centimeters) beginning Tuesday.
