It is noteworthy that the International Olympiad in Informatics is one of the most important computer science competitions in the world, as it is held under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). It is an international competition held annually in computer science for middle and high school students.
The history of the competition dates back to October 1987 during the twenty-fourth conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, when Professor Slagovist Sandov (Prof. Slagovest Sendov) Bulgaria organized an international competition in the field of programming and information technology to direct efforts towards this new field at the time. The idea was widely welcomed and the first International Olympiad in Informatics was held in Bulgaria in 1989 with the participation of competitors from 25 countries.
The Olympiad aims to motivate students to take an interest in computer science and information technology, but its ultimate goal is to strengthen the bonds of friendship between participating students as well as between computer science and information technology experts in the world, as the Olympiad is a meeting place for upcoming geniuses and experts in the field of software and information technology.
