Former Premier League star, 43, rushed to hospital alongside two fellow coaches after horrifying car crash

A former Premier League footballer has been rushed to hospital after being involved in a terrifying car crash.

The 43-year-old played for West Ham, Fulham and Leicester during his six-year stay in England between 2006 and 2012.

He called time on his playing career in 2016 and has since moved into coaching.

John Paintsil is now Ghana’s assistant manager, and was travelling with national team boss Otto Addo and goalkeeping coach Fatawu Dauda back to Ghana’s capital city, Accra, on Saturday after watching a national cup final when their Toyota Land Cruiser collided with a pick-up truck.

All three men were taken to hospital in the aftermath of the crash, before the Ghana FA released a statement providing an update on their condition.

The statement read: ‘Members of the Black Stars technical team were involved in a road accident while returning from Tarkwa.

‘The vehicle carrying Head Coach Otto Addo, Assistant Coach John Paintsil and goalkeepers trainer Fatawu Dauda avoided a head-on collision with a pickup truck which veered off into its lane, with some damage to the vehicle.

‘All three members of the technical team are in stable condition, and will undergo further medical assessments upon their return to Accra.’

Photos and video have emerged of the wreckage following the crash, and show the vehicle with one side badly caved in and wheels missing.

Paintsil earned 89 caps for Ghana and played at two World Cups in 2006 and 2010. Ghana almost became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals of the latter tournament, but were beaten on penalties by Uruguay in the quarter-finals following Luis Suarez’s controversial handball.

Ghana are due to face Angola and Niger in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers over the coming week, but Paintsil and his fellow coaches will require further medical checks before discovering whether they will be able to be on the touchline for the two matches.
