Ukraine gets green light to use F-16s for airstrikes deep inside Russia

Arab Defense Website September 2, 2024: The Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Ono Eichelheim, stated in an interview with Radio NOSthat Ukraine could deploy F-16 fighter jets it received from the Netherlands against targets in Russia. He explained: “We have not placed any restrictions on the use or range of the F-16s, provided that the laws of war are respected.”

Eichelheim stressed that this policy extends to other weapons provided by the Netherlands – the Ukrainian military is authorized to use them on the battlefield “at its discretion,” as long as they comply with international humanitarian law. “We are committed to Ukraine’s victory and are doing everything possible to support it,” he noted.

In total, the Netherlands has committed to supplying Ukraine with 24 F-16s. However, Eichelheim did not disclose how many have been deployed so far. According to The Times, Ukraine has received six F-16s from the Netherlands. In total, 79 of the fighters have been promised, including those from Belgium, Denmark and Norway. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is demanding an increase to 120-130 fighters to effectively counter Russia in the air.
