Brendon McCullum named England’s new white-ball coach after Matthew Mott’s sacking – following seismic impact of Bazball on Ben Stokes’ Test side

Brendon McCullum has been named as England’s new white-ball coach after managing director Rob Key decided to unite the jobs following the sacking of Matthew Mott.

McCullum will remain as head coach of the Test team, and will not take charge of the limited-overs sides until the white-ball tour of India early next year, quickly followed by the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. His ECB contract has been extended by two years, until the end of 2027 – which means he will be in charge for that year’s home Ashes series.

Marcus Trescothick, meanwhile, will still take charge on an interim basis of the white-ball series at home to Australia this month and the tour of the Caribbean in late October, before handing over to McCullum in early 2025.

Key’s decision means the red- and white-ball coaching roles will be unified for the first time since Chris Silverwood was sacked after the 2021-22 Ashes. ‘Being able to align all teams now is particularly exciting, and we look forward to taking on all challenges that come our way,’ said Key.

McCullum, who captained New Zealand to the 2015 World Cup final, said: ‘I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team, and I’m excited to extend my role to include the white-ball sides.

‘I’m eager to work closely with Jos [Buttler]. The talent within English cricket is immense, and I’m looking forward to helping these players reach their full potential.’

Key explained that the move was possible only because, from next year, there will be less overlap on the fixture list.

‘For the last two years, constant clashes between formats have made it challenging for the white-ball environment,’ he said. ‘Fortunately, these are easing, starting from January.

‘I’m delighted that Brendon has chosen to do both roles now with England. I believe we are incredibly fortunate that a coach of his quality is prepared to commit wholeheartedly to English cricket.’
