John Oliver had dog lovers everywhere furious with the Emmy Awards after they played exit music at the WORST possible time.
Oliver was accepting the Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series for Last Week Tonight when he threw in a lil’ tribute to his dog, who recently passed. Guess he’s given so many Emmy acceptance speeches now that he’s just saying whatever comes into his head!
“In particular, I want to thank the silly odd dog. We have the most fantastic dog and she was at our wedding, and she got us through the pandemic. She was with us for two pregnancies,” he said, before being cut off by the dreaded play off music.
Someone being ushered off stage while talking about their dead dog certainly wasn’t on my bingo card, but boy, did it make for great live TV!
Oliver had the perfect response, saying: “Perfect choice of music. We had to say goodbye to her.”
Just when it seemed like the acceptance speech couldn’t get any more rogue, Oliver jokingly lashed out at the musical director.
“Fuck you! I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now,” he shouted, referring to McLachlan’s SPCA video where she calls out animal cruelty.
“She was an amazing dog. This isn’t just for her. This is for all dogs. All dogs, you are all very good girls. You are very good boys. You all deserve a treat. Play me off now! Thanks so much.”
The internet approved of Oliver’s unintentional comedy, and it was low-key a highlight of the awards show. Don’t come between a man and his dog!
