The Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Program (GEF – SGP) reported that 9 new projects were funded; Bringing the total number of projects funded within the seventh practical phase, extending between 2022 and 2026, to 25 projects.
The National Director of the Small Grants Program, Dr. Imad El-Din Adly, said – in a statement today, Sunday – that these projects are being implemented in 7 governorates distributed over… 4 geographical regions, including Cairo and Giza in the Greater Cairo region, Alexandria and Beheira in the North Delta region, and Qena and Luxor in the South Upper Egypt region, next to Fayoum Governorate.
He added that the new projects include two strategic projects and a pilot project, in addition to 6 other projects, within the fields of The program’s work, which includes reducing climate change, preserving biological diversity, protecting lands from degradation and international waters, and reducing the use of persistent organic pollutants.
He explained that one of the strategic projects within the seventh practical phase is the "project "Bee Girls" Implemented by the Community Development Association in Sinro al-Qibliya in Fayoum Governorate, the project aims to contribute to protecting biodiversity and ecosystem services by promoting sustainable beekeeping practices, supporting healthy honey bee populations, in addition to empowering girls through beekeeping and apiary projects, and promoting a deeper understanding of the importance of bees and their role. In the work of the ecosystem.
He continued that the second strategic project is “adapting to climate change and protecting the agricultural area.” It is implemented by the Egyptian Society for Community Development in Beheira. To create an integrated model that deals with the issue of adaptation to climate change in the field of agriculture with the aim of integrating it into agricultural policies at the local and national levels, and disseminating and expanding it in agricultural areas affected by climate change in the northern and central Delta regions, in order to achieve an agricultural renaissance in Egypt. The project depends on establishing 4 field schools. For rice, artichoke, potatoes and green beans, as they are export crops.
He pointed out that the new projects include a pilot project implemented by the Integrated Services Association in Kafr El-Dawwar in Beheira Governorate, which is the “Azolla Egypt…Green Gold” project. Which depends on providing three integrated ecosystems based on the use of solar energy in cultivating the Azolla plant. Which is used as animal fodder with high nutritional value, with a total area of 159 acres distributed among three of the villages targeted by the (Decent Life) initiative within the Kafr El-Dawwar Center.
He pointed out that the projects of the second round of the seventh practical phase of the Small Grants Program include a project Titled “Green Universities for a Better Future” Implemented by the “Climate of Our Earth” Foundation. It targets the building of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Alexandria University, as well as the “Badir” project. To use renewable energy in agricultural practices and is implemented by the “Umm Al-Qura Society for Community Development” Association. In Luxor Governorate.
He confirmed that the projects of the second round include the project “A Green Model for Environmental Transformation in the Village of Tunis.” Which is implemented by the “Spirit of Life for Development and Dialogue” Association. in Fayoum Governorate, and the project “Sustainable Management of Plastic Waste and Reducing Climate Change” Implemented by the “Al-Rowad” Foundation. For projects and development in Cairo Governorate, and the “Mitigation and Resilience to Climate Changes in Al-Amiriya Neighborhood” project. Implementation of the Egyptian Youth Association for Development and Environment in Cairo Governorate, and the “Environmentally Friendly Youth Centres” project.
