Julia Roberts will receive an honorary tribute at the milestone 50th edition of the César Award, France’s equivalent to the Oscars. The ceremony will take place on Feb. 28 at the Olympia theater in Paris.
“Julia Roberts fascinates, she is a source of inspiration and an icon of world cinema,” said the Cesar academie. “Julia Roberts is not just a movie star, she’s also an icon of popular culture, and her influence extends far beyond her performances.”
Since breaking through in 1990 with the role of Vivian Ward in “Pretty Woman,” Roberts has “enjoyed a string of successes, with roles as varied as they are unforgettable,” said the Cesar academie, pointing out to romantic comedies such as “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “Notting Hill,” along with thrillers such as “The Pelican Affair” and “Erin Brockovich” and “Alone Against All” for which she won the Oscar for best actress in 2001.
Roberts has worked with iconic filmmakers such as Steven Soderbergh, with whom she filmed “Ocean’s Eleven” and Mike Nichols in “Closer.” She’ll next be seen in Luca Guadagnino in “After the Hunt.”
The Honorary Cesar Award, which pays tribute to artists and filmmakers’ career achievements, has previously be handed out to filmmakers and actors such as David Fincher, Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz, Robert Redford and George Clooney.
Aside from her acting career, Roberts in involved in philanthropic initiatives. She has been involved in humanitarian causes around the world through her role as UNICEF ambassador.
