‘Dunkirk’ And ‘Tenet’ Designer Nathan Crowley To Be Feted At Camerimage Film Festival

Poland’s Camerimage Film Festival will hand its Special Award for a Production Designer to six-time Oscar nominee Nathan Crowley during this year’s edition, which runs November 16-23 in Toruń.

Crowley is perhaps best known internationally for his longtime collaboration with Christopher Nolan. He has received five Oscar nods for his collaborations with the British filmmaker. Their films include Tenet, The Dark Knight, Dunkirk, Interstellarand The Prestige. Crowley was also nominated for Damien Chazelle’s First Man.

Beginning his career at the Brighton School of Art in the UK, Crowley moved to Hollywood in the 1990s where he landed a Second Unit Art Director role on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He then worked on films by directors like Barry Levinson and Joel Schumacher. His first collaboration with Christopher Nolan was on Insomnia.

Crowley’s other credits include Westworld, Wonka, and Wicked 1 and 2. He is currently signed on to design the new Avengers films for the Russo Brothers. Beyond the screen, Crowley has designed four exhibitions for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which accompanied the Met Gala and collaborated with Sofia Coppola on La Traviata at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. He is also known for his design of the Space Watch for Hamilton, ODC X-03.

Crowley is the latest name added to the list of honorees at this year’s festival. Others include British filmmaker Steve McQueen, who will be feted at this year’s Camerimage Film Festival with the Outstanding Director Award for career achievement.

Blitz will land at Camerimage after debuting at the London Film Festival in October. Directed, produced, and written by McQueen, the film follows the epic journey of George, a 9-year-old boy in World War II London whose mother Rita sends him to safety in the English countryside. The Synopsis reads: George, defiant and determined to return home to Rita and his grandfather Gerald in East London, ensues on an adventure, only to find himself in immense peril, while a distraught Rita searches for her missing son. Blitz marks McQueen’s first sole feature screenwriting credit.
