Baseball fans RIP Bob Costas for his ‘terrible’ announcing during Yankees-Royals series: ‘Worst of all time’
A 28-time Emmy winner with decades of experience covering all areas of American sports, Bob Costas is beginning to irritate baseball fans.
Specifically, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals fans have grown displeased with the 72-year-old Long Island native, who is calling the ongoing American League Divisional Series between the two clubs for TBS.
In one moment during the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 3 on Wednesday, Costas declared a liner off the bat of Kansas City’s Vinnie Pasquantino to be a ‘base hit to center field’ only for Yankee shortstop Anthony Volpe to make a diving catch in shallow right-center field.
‘It was smothered out there,’ Costas exclaimed. ‘I don’t know if it was caught.’
TBS color commentator and retired MLB pitcher Ron Darling was quick to correct Costas: ‘It was caught.’
Bob Costas has been calling playoff baseball for decades, but not all fans are pleased with that
Royals second base Michael Massey (19) celebrates on third base in front of Jazz Chisholm Jr.
‘Oh my gosh,’ Costas responded. ‘What a play.’
Costas also flashed a bit too much enthusiasm earlier in the game when New York slugger Aaron Judge appeared to snap out of his slump with a long fly to left field.
‘Here’s a drive to deep left field!’ Costas exclaimed before his depth perception adjusted to the ball. ‘Does it have enough? It does not. At the edge of the track, [MJ] Melendez takes it.’
Costas had already been facing accusations he was favoring New York this series, but after Wednesday’s Game 3, it’s both Yankees and Royals fans who seemed upset.
‘Is Bob Costas done after this round?’ Barstool Sports’ Dan Katz wrote on X. ‘Please.’
‘Costas is the worst MLB announcer of all time,’ another fan added.
One critic made a Costas meme on X, portraying the announcer as a Halloween costume
One critic put together a Costas meme on X. Ostensibly a photo of a ‘TV Baseball Man’ Halloween costume, the pictured package supposedly includes ‘pointless ramblings,’ an ‘over-inflated sense of self’ and ‘unlimited monologues,’ but lacks any ‘self awareness.’
Costas was also caught on a hot microphone complaining about reading a spot for TBS’ sister station, CNN, during Game 2.
With Kansas City’s Angel Zerpa on the hill, Costas appeared to be told he had a promo to announce.
‘A CNN promo?’ Costas asked, seemingly unaware that he could be heard on the air. After brief pause, he added, ‘That puts me in a difficult spot.’
