Lani Pallister has added two more gold medals to her list at the World Short Course Championships, winning the 800m freestyle title and the 4x200m freestyle in Melbourne.

The young Australian opened her champion’s account on Tuesday night with the crown in the 400 meters and 24 hours later she added two more golds.

The 20-year-old Pallister, the daughter of former Australian distance swimmer Janelle Elford, took the lead in the 800 meters from the start.

With four laps to go her lead was up to half a pole length before hitting the wall in 8 minutes 4.07 seconds, which was 6.34 seconds ahead of the field.

It also beat her personal best by more than three seconds.

Kiwi Erica Fairweather, who also won silver in the 400 meters, finished second and Japan’s Miyu Namba third.

Less than two hours later, Pallister anchored the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay and won gold with a time of 7:30.87, breaking the world record by more than two seconds.

Pallister also had the fastest split of the Australians and her effort helped her country pull out of the US and Canada on the final leg.

The Queenslander’s world championship success has come after she considered giving the sport away after heart surgery and spent the past two years battling an eating disorder and glandular fever.

“It will probably take until the end of the week for it to sink in,” Pallister told Nine before starting preparations for the 4x200m freestyle relay final.

“I swam a personal best last night so I was excited to build on it again and to come away with another gold is just insane.”

World record holder in the long course 100m backstroke, Emma McKeown swimming in lane seven hit the wall in 55.49 seconds, Mollie O’Callaghan took silver with 55.62 and American Claire Curzan third.

The three-time Olympic gold medalist needed a big finish to overhaul the field.

“I had a tough turn on the third 25 and I had to give everything because I had to catch up,” said the 21-year-old.
