Hilaria Baldwin responds to Spanish accent criticism with Fanta Limón t-shirt
Hilaria Baldwin, wife of actor Alec Baldwin, seems to have subtly addressed criticism she fakes her Spanish heritage by donning a ‘Keep Calm and Fanta de Limón’ shirt.
Born Hilary in Massachusetts, Baldwin, 37, wore the t-shirt as she was leaving her Manhattan apartment on Tuesday morning, days after being criticized for addressing the press in a Spanish accent.
She has a history of falsely claiming she is Spanish – a habit she apologized for two years ago. At around that time she also shared a photo of herself wearing the same t-shirt, adding in a caption: ‘When life gives you lemons’.
The saying, ‘when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,’ is a popular American phrase intended to encourage optimism in the face of adversity.
Her outfit may also be a nod to an involuntary manslaughter charge imposed on her husband last week after he accidently shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust in 2021.
Fanta Limón, known in English as Fanta Lemon, is a Fanta variant that was discontinued in the US in 2018 but has long been a big player in the Spanish soda market.

Her move comes after this weekend prosecutors explained that although her husband would be charged over Hutchins’ death, he would not be charged for shooting the Rust director Joel Souza.
While filming their Western movie Rust on the outskirts of Santa Fe, Alec Baldwin accidentally shot both Hutchins and Souza with a single bullet.
Baldwin had been practicing drawing a revolver from his holster when a round was fired and pierced Souza’s shoulder after travelling through Hutchins’ chest.
The actor insisted during an interview with police that he had been told the gun was ‘cold’ when it was handed to him and, crucially, that he did not pull the trigger.
Baldwin has refuted an FBI report which claims he must have pulled the trigger for the gun to fire.
The Sante Fe District Attorney’s office, which is similarly charging the armorer on set, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, remained confident it could prosecute them both.
They are facing a maximum of 18 months in prison if convicted of involuntary manslaughter. If they’re also convicted of a firearm enhancement on that charge, they’ll face a mandatory five-year prison sentence.

Fanta Limón is a popular Fanta variant available in Spain but not in the US
Hilaria approached photographers on Friday and told them in a Spanish accent: ‘I’m going to tell you what I’m going to say, you’re not going to ask me questions. I want you guys to realize we have seven kids, and you being here to escort them to school and to be there when they come home is not good.
‘So, on a human level, you know that I’m not going to say anything to you. You know that. So please, leave my family in peace and let it play out.’
In February 2021 she apologized for faking her Spanish heritage, saying in an Instagram post that she ‘should have been more clear’ and that she had ‘spent the last month listening, reflecting, and asking myself how I can learn and grow’.
She acknowledged that she had been born in Boston and went by the name Hillary, despite claiming for years that Mallorca was her birthplace and that she only arrived in the US at 19 to study.

‘I came for school and I never, ever left,’ she said once in an April 2020 interview. A tax form also surfaced in which it was clear Hilaria debated between using her birth name and the adopted Spanish version.
The document shows she crossed out both the first name and last name of the 2009 W-4 document before finally decided on Hillary L. Hayward-Thomas – the name she was born with – on her second attempt.
Records also show that Hilaria’s parents, Dr Kathryn Hayward and David Thomas, were also both Massachusetts natives and had lived and worked in the US for years and only moved to Mallorca in 2011 when they retired.
Hayward is not Spanish and is in fact a fourth-generation Massachusetts resident who spent most of her career practicing medicine in Longmeadow, records show.
Hayward gave birth to Hillary in January 1984 in Boston.
