I’m a Canadian expat on the Gold Coast and there’s a good reason why I think men are ‘backwards’ here
An expat has shared a ‘strange’ observation about the men in Australia – and the biggest difference she’s noticed about her dating life after moving countries.
Tayler Stevenson, from Canada, said things are ‘backwards’ in Australia because men don’t approach her in public.
‘When I first moved here, not a single guy came up to me at the clubs and hit on me. I found it a bit weird, I was offended,’ she said in a video.
The lack of attention turned out to be a surprising perk because she could just ‘go out with the girls and have a good time’.
‘I have a boyfriend now and every time we go out to the clubs, there are a thousand girls coming up to him and hitting on him – and no guys come up to me at all,’ Taylor added.
‘Is that how it is here? Do the girls put in the work? Is it just a bit backwards?’
The culture shift from back home was jarring.
‘In North America, the guys come up to the girls. I don’t know any girls who would go up to a guy,’ she said.

Tayler also noticed that men Down Under were lacking in the height department.
‘Why is every single guy short?’ she asked. ‘I’m a pretty short girl, and I tower over all these men at the club.’
Hundreds of Australian women told Tayler that men probably weren’t going up to her because they were intimidated – while others commented on dating culture Down Under.
‘It’s because you’re stunning and they don’t want to be rejected,’ a fan said.
A woman shared: ‘My ex used to get hit on every time he left the house and refused to believe guys weren’t hitting on me everywhere.’
‘Guys want princess treatment here and I’m so tired,’ a woman wrote.
‘Similar situation in New Zealand,’ an Auckland resident said. ‘No one speaks to anyone when going out, even in clubs. Such a different scene from North America.’
An Aussie added, ‘Every time I travel I experience what it should be, and then I’m back here and invisible.’

A few men shared insights into their actions.
‘We are protecting our peace,’ a man wrote. ‘Dating in Australia is cooked so we don’t bother anymore.’
‘Guys have been told many times that ladies would prefer we don’t approach,’ another said.
‘Don’t talk to her, leave her alone – maybe Australian guys are just better at listening.’
‘Australian girls are too toxic to approach. They have an inflated sense of worth,’ a third added.
