Arsenal fans were forced to vacate their seats during their 1-1 draw with Sporting Lisbon after the stadium suffered huge leaks.

The Gunners crashed out of the Europa League after goals from Granit Xhaka and Pedro Goncalves on the night tied the aggregate score at 3-3.

Mikel Arteta’s side were then taken to a penalty shoot-out, where they lost 5-3 on after a missed spot-kick from Gabriel Martinelli gave the visitors the advantage.

And, to make matters worse, a number of Arsenal fans were left drenched as leaks from the Emirates roof began pouring down in multiple sections of the stadium.

Footage shared by fans on social media showed two areas where water was flowing down onto fans – both in the East Stand and the Clock End.

Videos clearly showed that Arsenal fans had moved from their seats in order to avoid the torrential down-fall that occurred with ten minutes, of regular time, still remaining in the game.

It was far from an ideal night for the hosts as, on top of their water-leaking issues, were dumped out of the Europa League after a lengthy battle with Sporting.

Granit Xhaka had fired Arsenal ahead in the first half before a spectacular goal from the centre circle put Sporting level, with Pedro Golcalves lobbing Aaron Ramsdale from the half-way line.

After an intense period of extra-time, with the scores still locked, the match was sent to penalties. Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli was the only player to miss from the spot, as Ruben Amorim’s side booked their place in the quarter-finals.

After the match, Gunners boss Arteta was adamant that his side couldn’t ‘find our rhythm and flow’ during the contest in north London.

‘We really wanted to go through and fight in the competition and go for it,’ said Arteta. ‘Today we tried and it wasn’t enough.

‘We didn’t find our rhythm and flow, we were late, we gave the ball away many, many times. We found our flow in the last 20 minutes but we didn’t score.

‘We showed incredible energy and mentality but we didn’t win. The penalty is a lottery.’
