Frank blames referee for boot incident

Tottenham fell behind at Newcastle with 24 minutes gone when Fabian Schar met Sandro Tonali’s corner – which was delayed by Djed Spence tying his bootlaces – with a firm downward header, prompting ultimately futile protests from the visitors that the defender had not been allowed to get back into position.

“Always disappointing to lose, always disappointing to go out of the tournament that we would love to progress in,” the Spurs manager said.

“Small margins decided the game tonight – it was a very even game with chances and situations in both boxes. The two goals were also small margins where there was two mistakes.

“One [mistake] unfortunately from [referee] Chris Kavanagh, in terms of things you need to give. Djed Spence had his boot off – he needs time to tie his boot and he didn’t. His marker, Schar, scored. I have spoken to Chris about it, and we will keep that between Chris and I.”

Maresca fumes with Delap over red card

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca accused Liam Delap of being selfish after receiving a “stupid” and “embarrassing” red card in the Carabao Cup victory over Wolves.

Delap was dismissed in the 4-3 success at Molineux after picking up two yellow cards in seven minutes after coming on as a substitute for his first appearance since August.

The first booking was for wrestling Yerson Mosquera to the ground and his second came after a reckless aerial challenge with Emmanuel Agbadou.

It was Chelsea’s sixth red card in nine games this season and the Italian was unhappy with his striker, who will now miss the weekend clash with Tottenham.

“For today we have a very a stupid red card, that was completely unnecessary, absolute it was a stupid foul, we can avoid that,” Maresca said.

“I completely support and understand the red card like against Brighton and Manchester United that is difficult, but the red card against Nottingham and a red card today we can avoid that and we have to avoid that.

“It’s embarrassing when it is a red card like today. It’s embarrassing, two yellow cards in seven minutes. Both I think we can avoid.

“After the first yellow card I told him to four or five times ‘keep calm’, but he’s a player when he is inside the pitch, probably he is playing the game for himself and he struggled to realise and to listen around him.”

Arsenal keep another clean sheet

Arsenal’s defence has been breached just three times in 14 matches across all competitions so far.

Arteta said: “We were struggling in the first half. I expected that when you make 10 changes and you have players that have never played before and some of them haven’t played much this season.

“You have to gamble. But I was ready to take that risk and in the second half, we needed to start in a different way and we certainly did that and the game shifted momentum.”

Arteta hails debutant Dowman

Mikel Arteta lauded Max Dowman’s “special” performance as the 15-year-old rewrote history by becoming Arsenal’s youngest-ever starter in his side’s Carabao Cup victory against Brighton.

Ethan Nwaneri and Bukayo Saka – who replaced Dowman with 20 minutes remaining – struck in the second half as Arsenal secured a 2-0 win at the Emirates to book their place in the fifth round and a home tie against Crystal Palace.

But it was Dowman, still two months and two days shy of his 16th birthday, who stole the show and was afforded a standing ovation as he departed the pitch.

“A tiny smile, that’s what you get with him,” said Arteta when asked how Dowman reacted when he told him he was starting.

“For him everything is natural, for him everything is OK. It’s the way he plays and that’s the secret, that he doesn’t make a big fuss of it.

“He just does what he does best, which is to play football. To play football with a lot of courage and determination and today again, he has shown some incredible skill, some capacity to run past players at that level in the Premier League at 15. It’s definitely something special.”

City come through close encounter

Manchester City overcame a Carabao Cup scare to book their quarter-final place with a 3-1 win at Swansea.

Goncalo Franco had fired the Championship outfit ahead with the game’s first goal attempt after 12 minutes but City equalised before half-time as Jeremy Doku’s effort took a wicked deflection.

Swansea had to soak up intense pressure but, without the absent Erling Haaland, City largely fired blanks until Omar Marmoush blasted them ahead after 77 minutes.

Rayan Cherki confirmed victory in stoppage time by rolling the ball inside Andy Fisher’s far post, finally ending Swansea hopes of repeating their third-round victory over Nottingham Forest.

Carabao Cup draw

Cardiff have been handed a dream home Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Chelsea.

The League One club are the lowest ranked team left in the competition, having won 2-1 at Welsh rivals Wrexham on Tuesday night.

Chelsea came through 4-3 against Wolves at Molinuex, holding off a second-half fightback from the home side to secure their place in the last eight.

Elsewhere in the draw, holders Newcastle will be at home to Fulham.

Eddie Howe’s side saw off Tottenham 2-0 at St James’ Park on Wednesday night, while Fulham had edged past League One Wycombe on penalties on Tuesday evening.

The Gunners beat Brighton 2-0 on Wednesday night – and had battled to a 1-0 win over the Eagles on Sunday to keep themselves top of the table.

Manchester City, who came from behind to win 3-1 at Swansea, will be at home against Brentford.

The Bees coasted to a 5-0 victory at Grimsby on Tuesday night.

The quarter-final ties will take place in the week commencing December 15.

Arteta hails Arsenal’s fourth-round win

Mikel Arteta delighted by Arsenal’s win over Brighton (and yet another clean sheet):

“A very special evening to be fair, very happy for various reasons. Obviously, we are in the quarter-finals, and we won the game against a really tough opponent. We made 10 changes, we played players that never played together, yet we made two huge debuts for Max [Dowman] and Andre [Harriman-Annous]. That feeling of giving the opportunity to somebody and fulfilling a dream is unique, and I’m very happy that things turned out to be very positive, and we managed to win the game.”

Vitor Pereira: ‘It is my fault’

Vitor Pereira has spoken after Wolves’ rousing second-half comeback which almost overturned Chelsea’s three-goal lead at half-time:

“What a second half. In the first half, we conceded the first goal and when I looked at the team, they were a bit lost and we conceded the second and third goals. It’s my responsibility. We changed 11 players today and we play with 11 players who have not been playing for a long time. The connection is not easy for this kind of game.

“We spoke at half-time and I told them it is my fault, but I want to see my team and the spirit. We won 3-1 in the second half. The goal we conceded was a pity. We had the chance to score more goals. I am very happy with the spirit we showed in the second half and with our supporters. We feel the energy to compete and to change the situation.”

Carabao Cup quarter-final draw

Premier League leaders Arsenal will play Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after Oliver Glasner’s side knocked out Liverpool in the fourth round.

Palace thumped the league champions 3-0 as Arne Slot’s heavily rotated side found themselves outplayed at Anfield, in what was Liverpool’s sixth defeat in seven games.

Cardiff City, the only side left in the competition from outside the Premier League, will host Chelsea, Manchester City will entertain Brentford, while Newcastle United will take on Fulham at St James’ Park.
