David Seaman laughs off Jamie Carragher’s criticism of Arsenal’s celebrations after their 3-1 win against Liverpool… claiming the Gunners had every right to celebrate ‘massive win’

David Seaman has laughed off Jamie Carragher’s criticism of Arsenal’s celebrations following their 3-1 victory against title rivals Liverpool claiming the Sky Sport’s pundit’s comments made him ‘chuckle’.

The former Gunners goalkeeper added that that the team were entitled to celebrate the ‘massive result’ after Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard all scored to help Arsenal go within two points of Jurgen Klopp’s side at the top of the Premier League.

It was the Gunners’ third victory on the bounce and they proceded to celebrate the triumph at full-time, with Martin Odegaard being seen borrowing a camera from club photographer Stuart MacFarlane, before being seen taking pictures of the cameraman and fans inside the Emirates.

His celebrations infuriated Carragher, who said to Sky Sports during the live coverage of the match: ‘Just get down the tunnel. You’ve won a game, three points, you’ve been brilliant. Back in the title race, get down the tunnel. I’m serious, honestly.’

Several other members of the footballing world have hit back at Carragher’s comments, including Ian Wright and Jan Aage Fjortoft, with Seaman now claiming the rant had made him laugh.

Speaking on the Seaman Says podcast, the former goalkeeper said: ‘I did have a little chuckle last night when I was listening to Jamie Carragher having a go at Odegaard and the photographer. I’m like: “Oh, just lost have ya Jamie?!

‘I was like, “Oh my god, so you’ve never celebrated?!”, and Stuart [MacFarlane], the photographer, has been there since I was there. He’s been there since day one and everyone loves Stuart. He’s so passionate about Arsenal.

‘He knows everything about Arsenal, loves everything about Arsenal and I like that. I like that little interaction because Stuart wanted his bit with all the fans behind and all the fans stayed behind.

‘It was a good day for Arsenal, a really good day. I can’t have a go at Mikel Arteta or the lads for celebrating how they did because it was a massive result for Arsenal.’

After the match, Carragher continued to rant about the incident on social media, clashing with Fjortoft on X (formerly Twitter), after he had posted a video of the Norwegian midfielder posing with the camera. He captioned the video: ‘By all means enjoy it, but enjoy it by being disciplined!’

Fjortoft, meanwhile, didn’t see the funny side to Carragher’s jibe, writing in reply: ‘Come on @Carra23. Let Martin show his passion! Also on the pitch. Let him have this moment with his mates at Arsenal like @Stuart_PhotoAFC.’

Wright was also furious with the reaction to the Gunners’ celebrations, writing on X: ‘You lot can take the p**s if it doesn’t happen like you normally do. Leave us alone.’

Even Odegaard has now issued a response to Carragher’s jibes. When asked whether it was possible the Gunners had over-celebrated the win, the Norwegian said: ‘No, I think everyone who loves football, who understands football, they know how much it means to win this game.

‘And if you’re not allowed to celebrate when you win a game, when are you allowed to celebrate? We’re happy with the win and we’ll stay humble.

Arsenal have now won all three of their last Premier League matches with Mikel Arteta’s side correcting course after a lapse in form that saw them lose to West Ham and Fulham in the league, before they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Liverpool.

Seaman, who won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Arsenal, echoed the midfielder’s comments, again emphasising the gravity of the victory, before insiting the celebrations came from the team’s relief at securing the win.

‘Liverpool weren’t at it but don’t take anything away from Arsenal because the way they started the game was brilliant.

Arsenal manager, Arteta, was overcome with emotion after the final whistle on Sunday

‘I loved the passion. There has been a lot said about Mikel Arteta and the way that we were celebrating. I loved that.

‘It’s a little bit on the edge, if I’m being honest. You know what I’m like: calm down, accept it! [laughs] – but it’s because of what was on the game.

‘Arsenal lose that game and we are out of the title race. We are eight points behind Liverpool and Manchester City have still got two games in hand, so that would have been devastating.

‘I think that celebration came from the pressure of knowing what could happen if we got beat. The relief, that’s what it is.’
