Furious India expels Canadian diplomat in tit-for-tat move after Justin Trudeau accused New Delhi of assassinating Sikh leader outside temple in British Colombia

India has expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move after Justin Trudeau accused its government of assassinating a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia.

A diplomatic row between the two countries is deepening as Ottawa investigates ‘credible allegations’ the Indian government may have had links to the assassination of a Canadian citizen.

Trudeau has since acted by expelling a top Indian diplomat – the head of Indian intelligence in Canada – with foreign affairs minister Melanie Joly vowing yesterday that ‘we will get to the bottom of this.’

Trudeau has raised the issue both with US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Joly added.

Soon after, India’s ministry of external affairs said in a statement that its expulsion ‘reflects Government of India’s growing concern at the interference of Canadian diplomats in our internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities’.

It comes as tensions between the two countries grow, with Hindu nationalist leader Modi calling for Trudeau to crack down on Sikh protesters in Canada who want their own independent homeland in the Punjab district of north India, called Khalistan.

Trudeau made a statement about the death of Singh Nijjar, 46, who was a strong supporter of the Khalistan movement, while addressing the Canadian House of Commons on Monday.

‘Today I’m rising to inform the house  of an extremely serious matter,’ he told MPs.
