Man allegedly spits and throws bacon on a passerby after he was caught spraying anti-Semitic graffiti on the mansion of well-known Jewish family

A man has been accused of spray painting anti-Semitic graffiti on the home of a well-known Jewish family before assaulting a passerby who tried to intervene.

The 68-year-old from Macedon, north-west of Melbourne, was arrested after he allegedly painted the Star of David on the fence of the mansion at Middle Park in the city’s south on Friday night.

When a man confronted the vandal he threw a packet of bacon at him and spat on him, police allege.

The Star of David has been used historically by Jews to represent their identity but during the Nazi regime it was also used to mark Jewish people on their clothes or shopfronts.

‘There is absolutely no place at all in our society for anti-Semitic or hate-based symbols and behaviour. Police will always treat reports of such crime seriously,’ a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

Port Phillip Mayor Louise Crawford sent a council team on Saturday to paint over the graffiti and said the area’s close-knit Jewish community was still reeling from an arson attack at the Adass Israel synagogue in nearby Ripponlea.

‘While, thankfully, this incident did not involve physical injuries, it is still a cowardly attack targeting Port Phillip’s Jewish community,’ she said.

‘We want the community to know we continue to stand with you and whole-heartedly condemn any anti-Semitic activity in our city.’

Detectives have charged a man on Tuesday over graffiti painted on the mansion of a Jewish family in Melbourne’s  inner south (the graffiti is pictured)

Port Phillip detectives on Tuesday charged the man with criminal damage, unlawful assault and mark offensive graffiti. He was given bail to appear at Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on May 6.

It is the latest in a string of anti-Semitic attacks in Australia.

Cars have been set alight, a synagogue burnt down and anti-Jewish slurs painted on buildings and cars across Sydney and Melbourne in incidents that have escalated in frequency and severity since December

Israeli ambassador to Australia Amir Maimon denounced the incidents on X, describing them as an ‘ongoing barrage of attacks’ and ‘deliberate intimidation’ against Jews.

The most shocking was the apparent discovery in NSW of a caravan laden with explosives.

The caravan was packed with enough explosives for a 40-metre-wide blast and sat abandoned for 12 days on a semi-rural road at Dural in northwest Sydney before being discovered on January 19 with a note that contained anti-Semitic sentiments and listed ‘Jewish entities’, police say.

The discovery triggered a multi-agency investigation involving more than 100 counter-terrorism officers.

The coalition has called for mandatory jail sentences for those who commit terrorism offences or display hate symbols.
