A year ago today, the FIFA World Cup was held in the State of Qatar, which was eventually crowned by the Argentine national team, led by its superstar, Lionel Messi.
Today, people are recalling their memories of the most prominent tournament in the world, through the charitable initiative launched by Sotheby’s Auction House, in cooperation with the World Cup star, whose name this tournament was closely linked to, especially since he fulfilled his football dream of winning the World Cup in it.
Messi says about the World Cup: “I have dreamed of the cup so many times, and I have wanted to hold it, to the point that I have not yet believed… that we have won it.”
The global initiative, which is organized by Sotheby’s Auction House, in cooperation with Lionel Messi, is to display for sale at auction a group of shirts that Messi wore during the first half of the final match, the semi-final matches, the quarter-final matches, the round of 16, and two group stage matches. Dedicated to it online, starting from November 30th, until next December 14th, the value of the exceptional collection is estimated at more than $10 million, and this auction is expected to achieve the highest value of sports memorabilia.
The auction aims to donate a portion of its proceeds to the “UNICAS” project, which is implemented by the Sant Joan de Déu (SJD) Children’s Hospital in Barcelona, with support from the Leo Messi Foundation, to meet the needs of children suffering from rare diseases. This comes in the wake of work completed by the Leo Messi Foundation with the Children’s Cancer Center at the SJD Children’s Hospital in Barcelona, which treats 400 children with cancer every year.
Record number of shirt sales:
The record for the sale of a piece of memorabilia from a sports match is currently set for a jersey worn by Michael Jordan in the 1998 NBA Finals, which was sold for $10.1 million at Sotheby’s New York during the month of September 2022. As for the record for a piece of football sports, it goes back to To Diego Maradona’s shirt from the match during which he scored a goal with his hand against England in 1986, which was sold for $9.3 million at Sotheby’s London during May 2022.
Lionel Andres Messi Cuccittini, born on June 24, 1987, is an Argentine football player who currently plays as a striker and captain for Inter Miami, which competes in the American Elite League, and the Argentine national team.
Messi is considered one of the best football players in the world, and some consider him the best. Messi has won eight Ballon d’Or awards, and is the record holder of six European Golden Shoes. He spent most of his professional career with the Spanish team Barcelona, where he won 35 titles with the club, including: ten Spanish League titles, four Champions League titles, and seven Copa del Rey titles.
