Michail Antonio believes Neal Maupay’s antics could come back to bite him, claiming ‘he’s probably the most disliked person on the field’… after the Brentford forward’s heated spats with Kyle Walker and James Maddison

Michail Antonio has claimed Neal Maupay’s antics could one day come back bite him after the forward has clashed with several opponents in recent weeks including James Maddison and Kyle Walker.

Maupay first caused controversy when he butted heads with the Tottenham midfielder after copying his darts celebration during Brentford’s 3-2 defeat by Ange Postecoglou’s side.

The Frenchman also clashed with Kyle Walker during their game against Man City on Monday night, with a lip reader claiming Maupay had ‘whispered taunts about his opponent’s children’. Walker had allegedly responded by threatening to ‘knock his opponent out’.

While many have offered their opinions on Maupay’s trolling, with the Bees forward being coined one of the ‘biggest wind-up merchants in football’, Antonio has given his take on the recent antics, claiming Maupay has gained a reputation for irritating his opponents.

‘He’s probably the most disliked person on the field,’ the West Ham forward said on BBC 5 Live Sport’s podcast ‘The Players Channel’.

Cairney stated he thought the Brentford forward was 'unbelievable' at winding opponents up

‘He literally goes on the pitch to rub people up the wrong way. And he’s known for it now.

‘There’s going to be a day where someone’s not going to have it and at half-time or at the end of the game it’s going to be a problem!’

Antonio was joined on the podcast by Fulham’s Tom Cairney who echoed his sentiment but added that Maupay has perfected his craft.

Cairney said: ‘It is an art. It’s a skill. Because before the game the manager will be like “don’t let him annoy you, don’t get yellow silly yellow cards.”

‘He’s unbelievable. And like you said, Kyle Walker was close to losing his head the other night.’

While Maupay had copied Maddison’s celebrations during their game against Tottenham, it was the Spurs star who had the last laugh claiming victory.

He had appeared to share some words with his opponent on the pitch, and after the game, Maddison revealed to TNT Sports what he had said while taking a dig at the Bees forward.

‘I just said to him he probably hasn’t scored enough goals of his own in the last few years to have his own celebration so he had to copy mine, he said.

‘Short story, but it ended well for us anyway.’

The Frenchman, who has six goals in 21 appearances for both Everton and Brentford this season, posted an image on social media of him copying Maddison’s darts celebration after the match.

He humerously captioned the post: ‘Went a bit early with that one.’

Maddison posted a similar image of Maupay on his Instagram, saying ”A short story… COYS’ to which Maupay replied: ‘Rent free’ with several ‘kissing emojis’.

His spat with Walker though was much more heated, with Mail Sport’s Chris Sutton, who called his behaviour ’embarrassing’ on ‘It’s All Kicking Off’.

‘It just seems quite odd to me because there are levels, aren’t there?’ Sutton said. ‘This is what I can’t quite work out about him.

‘When you dish it out to players who, frankly, are miles better than you, I think that’s a really odd mindset. I would be thinking just keep your mouth shut, stay under the radar.

‘You want to be competitive, you can be physical, whatever, but chucking out comments to Kyle Walker, I do not get that in any way, shape or form, he should be embarrassed really.’

He added: ‘Thomas Frank, decent guy, I don’t know, maybe he is saying behind closed doors keep doing it, but he can’t like it.’
