Read the chilling flyer placed in resident’s letterboxes ahead of paedophile’s release from prison

An anonymous flyer handout has triggered widespread fear ahead of an infamous paedophile’s release from prison.

Peter Michael Liddy, 83, is due to be released on Thursday, June 4, after serving his 25-year sentence for sexually abusing four boys between 1982 and 1986.

The former magistrate was jailed in 2001 after he was found guilty of abusing the boys while working as a coach at Brighton Surf Life Saving, in Adelaide.

He became eligible for parole in 2019 but was repeatedly refused it as he did not show remorse for his crimes, which he stills claims he did not commit.

Residents in Wallaroo Mines, a suburb of Kadina 154km northwest of Adelaide on the Yorke Peninsula, received a disturbing flyer in their mailboxes this week, the Adelaide Advertiser reported.

‘You may be aware of public reporting regarding the release of convicted child sex offender and former magistrate Peter Liddy … under strict supervision and monitoring conditions,’ it read.

‘This notice is not intended to cause alarm or identify any location … it is simply a reminder for all residents to remain vigilant and to continue practising general child safety awareness.’

The court ruled Liddy would be released into home detention from Thursday and remain under monitoring for six months.

However, it hasn’t been disclosed where he will reside.

Previous court documents show Liddy owned a property in Moonta, neighbouring Kadina, and nearby Wallaroo.

It is unclear who shared the flyer, titled ‘Community Awareness – Child Safety and Community Wellbeing’.

‘Authorities including SA Police and the Department for Correctional Services are responsible for monitoring offenders in the community and managing any legal restrictions placed upon them,’ it read.

‘Please keep discussions respectful, factual and focused on protecting children and supporting a safe community for everyone.’

Byron Mills, a victim of Liddy, and his family have been vocal in calling for Liddy to remain behind bars since his first parole hearing in 2019.

Recently, Mr Mills said it ‘cannot reasonably be considered justice’ for Liddy to be released.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Correctional Services was unable to comment on Liddy’s case or the flyers but said offenders released into the community are subject to ‘strict supervision conditions’.

When he was imprisoned, Liddy was South Australia’s longest-serving magistrate. He served 25 years before retiring in 1999.

He spent periods of his imprisonment in solitary confinement to avoid aggression from fellow inmates he’d sentenced.

Liddy received the longest sentence for his offence, at the time, in South Australian history.
