That viral Shrek kissing filter on TikTok is reminding people of their ex
TikTok users are no stranger to odd filters on the app, like the viral ‘bold glamour’ filter that was dubbed ‘dangerous’ for users earlier this year.
But now, a less problematic but rather odd design has taken the video sharing app by storm – and it involves the iconic green ogre we all know and love.
If you’ve scrolled through your “For You Page” on TikTok in the last few days, chances are that you’ve seen random people pretend to snog the swamp creature. At the time of writing, the filter, created by TikTok user @ryleevigor2, has been used in 1.9 million posts so far.
When using the filter, the green guy grabs hold of the TikTok user’s face for added realism – tongues are thankfully not included.
Lots of people are going to great lengths to embrace the trend and by that we mean there are a lot of closed eyes, passionate smooches.
In an even stranger twist, the animated character has apparently reminded people of their former flames.
Could it be due to the one-handed face grip? The lack of romance (since it’s a filter after all) or the sheer awkwardness of the situation? We’ll never truly know, but a glance at the comments makes it clear that the DreamWorks Animation icon, who is voiced by Mike Myers, has reminded lots of women of past flings.
A woman tagged her pal in the comments section under one Shrek kissing filter video and wrote: ‘Stop this has me dead, remember who I used to call Shrek?’
Another TikTok user mentioned her friend in a comment, writing: ‘It’s like kissing our exes.’
A third commented: ‘Reminds me of my ex.’
The filter has also sparked a conversation about kissing ‘nice guys’ versus ‘toxic guys’ and why the latter sometimes feels more tempting in some scenarios.
