Zelensky’s ex-head of Kherson ‘kills himself’ after being appointed at start of war

Gennady Laguta, the former head of the Kherson Regional State Administration has died in Kyiv, according to media reports.

The 49-year-old is reported to have died in Kyiv while the cause of death has not been officially confirmed Laguta is reported to have taken his own life.

President Vladimir Zelensky sacked Gennady Laguta as head of the Kherson region in July last year and appointed an interim replacement.

In February 2023, the Security Service filed charges against the former chair of the Kherson Regional State Administration, accusing him of fraud and forging documents.

According to the findings of the investigation, Laguta temporarily received a Toyota Highlander owned by a local businesswoman at the start of the Russian invasion.

In a statement, the Kherson regional authority said: “The former head of the Kherson regional state administration Gennady Laguta passed away prematurely.

“We express our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and share their grief.

“We understand the bitterness of the loss of everyone who knew, loved and respected Gennady Nikolaevich.”
