Spain plans to deploy NASAMS anti-aircraft systems in Latvia

The Spanish government is considering increasing its military unit and deploying NASAMS missile systems in Eastern Europe, in particular in Latvia.

El Pais also reported an increase in the number of Spanish military personnel in Latvia by 90-100 personnel.

It is expected that the Spanish government will take a decision on the missiles at a meeting of leaders of NATO member states at the end of June in Madrid.

The Spanish authorities hoped that US President Joe Biden on the eve of the summit would invite Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to Washington, but in the end it was decided to arrange negotiations on the sidelines of the summit.

In addition, during the NATO summit it is scheduled to sign a cooperation agreement with the European Union, which recently approved its first defense strategy.
