6 Sneaky Easter Eggs You Might Have Missed In The Summer I Turned Pretty S3 Episode 9

Well friends, we’re in the chaos endgame of The Summer I Turned Pretty season three, and while some fans thought episode nine didn’t give all it needed to, I ask you to think again.

Between Belly (Lola Tung) flying to Paris, Conrad (Chris Briney) getting emotionally drop-kicked again, and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) drowning his feelings in tequila, it was a packed installment.

But in true Jenny Han fashion, amongst all the heartbreak and cancelled nuptials, the episode was stacked with sneaky little Easter eggs — the kind you only catch if you’re watching with one eye on TikTok, one on X (Twitter RIP), and another on your childhood copy of We’ll Always Have Summer.

So, let’s pick apart the things you almost definitely missed while following that Airtag around Paris, shall we?

While I lowkey agree, I promise you there’s more to it! (Image: TikTok)

1. The Boston Red Sox keep sliding in

When Conrad learns the wedding is officially off (cheers, dad), there’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of a baseball player smacking a home run on the TV. According to Decider, this was no throwaway detail.

Chris Briney, who plays Conrad, is a certified Boston Red Sox tragic, and given the team have actually leaned into the “Conrad supremacy” fandom on TikTok, it’s safe to say the red helmet and airport Red Sox backpack weren’t accidents. Plus, the home run happens when he hears about Jeremiah and Belly’s wedding being called off.

Jenny Han basically shouted: ‘Yes, Connie baby is still our endgame winner.’

2. Steven & Taylor finally got their rom-com moment

Sure, half the fandom was spiralling about Belly running off to Paris, but the real win was Steven (Sean Kaufman) and Taylor (Rain Spencer) finally making things official. Their sweet little “you’re worth it / no, YOU’RE worth it” exchange in the car feels even bigger when you track it back to season three, episode two.

Remember Taylor unravelling over his hospital bed, fearing he’d never see her as “worth it”? Yup. Full-circle cinema. Grab the tissues (again).

3. Conrad vs Jeremiah

This show loves a mirrored brother moment like it loves a Taylor Swift breakup song. In this ep, Conrad respects Taylor’s warning not to call Belly, while Jeremiah bulldozes through boundaries left, right, and centre.

Fans on social media noticed the contrast in how each brother responds to Belly’s vulnerability — Connie listens, Jere lashes out. It was always meant to be Conrad.

Plus, the way that each brother treat Laurel (Jackie Chung) is wayyyy different. I get that Jeremiah’s whole life blew up in front of him, but we will always be staying Team Laurel!

4. Benito? Ring Any Bells?

If Belly doesn’t boink Benito in a dirty club bathroom to complete her study abroad experience, I’ll sue! (Image: The Summer I Turned Pretty)

Let’s talk about Paris’ most chaotic accessory: Benito (Fernando Cattori). Belly meets him after her bag is nicked, and surprise surprise, he immediately starts dropping flirt-bombs in between visa anecdotes. But true fans know that Benito isn’t just a random character name.

Jenny Han actually mentioned him in Conrad’s letters from the book We’ll Always Have Summer.

In those letters, Conrad rants in peak jealous-boy mode about Belly hanging out with — wait for it — a scooter-riding Spanish guy named Benito, complete with leather pants and bad poetry energy.

So yeah, him reappearing here? Classic Jenny wink to the book girlies.

5. Conrad’s wedding present to Jeremiah and Belly

By the end of the episode, Conrad finds Jeremiah staring at their mum’s old painting — a “wedding gift” they’d never opened. Fans reckon it’s a depiction of Belly and Jere hunting for sand crabs as kids, a reference ripped straight from Jenny Han’s books.

If true, it’s a devastatingly wholesome reminder of Belly and Jere’s history, while also signalling Susannah’s (Rachel Blanchard) eternal presence over all their choices.

Subtle.

Sad.

Classic Han emotional terrorism.

6. La Jetée password

This one may be a stretch, but the 1962 French film La Jetée about memory and time travel gets name-dropped as a club password.

For the rest of us, it’s also French for “the pier” — Cousins dock vibes anyone?

So there you have it! Episode nine was Jenny Han doing what Jenny Han does best — sneaking tiny landmines of meaning under every hydrangea.

With only two episodes left, the Easter eggs are starting to feel less like fun nods and more like road signs pointing at a finale that’s going to wreck us all, and let me tell you I am SAT!
