Time to crank up “Bennie and the Jets” and pull out your best bridesmaid dress, because a sequel to 27 Dresses could actually be in the works.
Speaking to E! News this week, Katherine Heigl, star of the beloved 2008 rom-com, has dished that conversations are underway about a follow-up film.
“I think that we’re in talks about a 27 Dresses sequel, which, if done right and with that cast I love so much, would definitely be something I’d be willing to sort of compromise the mom time to do,” Heigl said.
It’s not the first time the idea of a sequel has been floated, but I really need the flick to this work out this time.
If you weren’t on a romcom bender like me back in the mid-2000s, you might’ve missed out on this classic, starring Heigl as the perennial bridesmaid Jane. Things get tricky when she’s roped into planning yet another wedding, this time for her little sister Tess (Malin Åkerman) who manages to charm (read: pretty much mislead) Jane’s boss George (Edward Burns) into falling in love with her.
The catch? Jane’s in love with him too.
Of course, in true romcom fashion, there’s a spanner in the works when journo Kevin (James Marsden) is hired to write about Tess and George’s wedding, but finds himself fascinated by Jane and her part-time job (basically) as a bridesmaid.
According to Heigl, any follow-up story to 27 Dresses would need to have just as much heart as the OG. And girl, same.
“It would have to be done right, but you don’t want to diminish the first one at all,” she said.
“You want to add to it. So, if we can do that and pull it off, I think that would be really fun. And I think they’re working on that.”
In good news for fans, Heigl isn’t the only 27 Dresses cast member who’s down for a sequel. Back in 2023, Marsden said he’d be so keen to jump on a part two and admitted he already has an idea of what it should be called.
“27 Children,” he quipped. “Bring it on.”
At the time, he pointed the movie “weirdly has legs that I’m not sure I anticipated it having”.
“Just a fanbase that people — when they talk about romantic comedies — you don’t really see too many of those made nowadays,” he said.
The 27 Dresses cast even reunited back in 2019, over a decade after the film’s release, and definitely had thoughts about its lasting popularity, and where it could go next.
“I want to do a sequel,” Heigl told Entertainment Tonight at the time.
“Unfortunately we can’t quite get the rights… I think it would be awesome to see what are their lives like 10 years later? Do they end up together? I personally think they did.”
She added at the time, “I think [Tess and George] have, like, three kids and she’s made Jane the godmother every time, so Jane has to plan the christenings and the baby showers and the gender-reveal parties, but then all the other bridesmaids [also] make her the godmother. But [Jane and Kevin] can’t get pregnant.”
Let me just say, I would pay good money to check in on my girl Jane and find out if she’s swapped out the bridesmaid dresses for baby onesies. Fingers crossed!!
