New York Yankees suffer yet another injury blow as superstar player heads for season-ending surgery

New York Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt has torn his UCL and requires season-ending Tommy John surgery, according to manager Aaron Boone.

In yet another heartbreaking injury blow for the MLB giants, Schmidt’s season is over and the team has lost yet another of its better arms.

Schmidt played on Thursday but left the game early with right forearm soreness, with Boone later revealing he would head for MRIs and further analysis.

Ahead of the second game of the Subway Series against the Mets on Sunday, the manager confirmed the worst, and Schmidt’s season is over as he heads for surgery.

The 2025 campaign has been littered with injuries to the Yankees’ roster, with pitchers Luis Gil, Fernando Cruz, Ryan Yarbrough and Yerry De Los Santos all picking up injuries over the past fortnight.

Prior to that, Oswaldo Cabrera – one of the team’s youngest assets – fractured his ankle running for home plate in a harrowing night on May 13.

In March, Jake Cousins and Gerrit Cole’s seasons were ended within days of each other, with the pitching pair suffering a UCL tear and a elbow ligament tear respectively.

Of the eight players mentioned above, four are out until next season at the earliest, while question marks remain over the others.

Prior to his injury earlier in the week, Schmidt was enjoying a productive season on the mound, posting a 3.32 ERA from 78.2 innings pitched, with 73 strikeouts.

The Bronx Bombers have dropped from first place in the AL East in recent weeks, having been overtaken by the in-form Toronto Blue Jays.

A 3-7 record in their last 10 has seen Boone’s side falter, and a .545 win percentage is far below expectations after last season’s World Series run.
