Ukraine-Russia war latest: Zelensky calls for tough sanctions on Russia ahead of meeting with Trump

Volodymyr Zelensky is calling for “strong sanctions” against Moscow before heading to New York for a meeting with US president Donald Trump.

The Ukrainian president was responding to a string of Russian incursions into Nato territory, something Trump on Friday warned could spell “big trouble” as he grows increasingly dismayed with Vladimir Putin’s actions.

“Russia must feel the consequences of what it is doing. Sufficient counteraction is needed to force them to seek peace,” Mr Zelensky said on X on Sunday.

Strong sanctions are a vital tool to stop Russia becoming a threat to EU countries, he added.

Nato is feeling increasingly threatened after Russian drones and fighter jets have entered Estonian, Polish and Romanian air space in recent weeks.

Czech president Petr Pavel has said Nato forces must shoot down Russian jets if necessary, demanding a more forceful response to Moscow’s repeated violations of the alliance’s airspace.

“Russia will realise very quickly that they have made a mistake and crossed the acceptable boundaries,” Mr Pavel said according to the Czech News Agency.

The UK sent fighter jets to Poland on Friday night in a clear warning to Vladimir Putin that Western nations will not tolerate Russia’s repeated incursions.
