Doritos lovers left divided after brand announces ‘illegal’ festive crisp – but shoppers hoping to try it will have to be quick

Doritos fans have been left baffled  over the release of a brand new crisp flavour.

The crisp brand is releasing a gingerbread flavour for Christmas, which will be on shelves from today.

The news was announced by the Instagram account, @newfoospottersuk, which uploaded a photo of two brand new Christmas collaborations, one with Pepsi and the other with Doritos.

The experimental new products will channel festive flavours with limited editions gingerbread varieties.

According to the social media page, both the gingerbread Pepsi and more bizarrely, Doritos, will be available to pick up in Tesco from today.

The picture revealed a 200g bag of limited edition gingerbread flavour corn chips in an orange bag featuring an illustration of the festive biscuits.

Captioning the post, she wrote: ‘NEW GINGERBREAD DORITOS & PEPSI IN TESCO FROM THURSDAY.’

For a limited time only, the gingerbread crisps will join the Doritos collection, which already includes the classic flavours, Chilli Heatwave, Cool Original, and Tangy Cheese.

More recently, the chip makers have added some more experimental flavours to their collection, including Zingy Vinegar Blast, Loaded Pepperoni Pizza, and Extra Flaming’ Hot.

However, news of the gingerbread flavour has stirred a mixed reaction among foodies.

Many were perturbed by the unlikely combination of sweet and salty. One wrote: ‘Gingerbread Doritos sounds illegal.’

A questioning second said: ‘Gingerbread Doritos, I don’t think so. I’m getting the Pepsi though.’

A third wrote: ‘Nahhhh this looks diabetes,’ while a fourth added: ‘Omg sounds disgusting.’

Echoing the sentiment, another commented: ‘That’s actually so disgusting what the actual hell?’

But some were more optimistic about the news. One wrote: ‘This sounds and looks amazing.’

A second optimist said: ‘Sounds banging I can’t lie,’ with another simply writing ‘wow’ beneath the photo.

It’s not the first time the brand have introduced a strange flavour combination.

In 2020, PepsiCo unveiled an unusual Mountain Dew flavoured version of Doritos.

Bringing together two iconic brands, Australian shoppers offered the chance to experience the lemon, citrus flavour of the soft drink with the corn chips.

The brand insisted fans would ‘love’ the unique mashup ‘We are excited to be launching this global first for Doritos here in Australia,’ Doritos brand manager, Eric Burke, said.

‘Aussie consumers are the first in the world to have the chance to try this unique new product that needs to be tasted, to be believed.

‘To create this unique flavour, we partnered with our beverages and research and development teams to ensure we got the flavour just right – and we think our consumers are going to love the result.’

Reactions at the time were similarly divided. ‘All my dreams have come true,’ one said.

A second person said: ‘Yeah, sure, mountain dew goes great with Doritos. But IN DORITOS!? ARE YOU CRAZY!?’

‘Could be good. Lime corn chips are great, and sweet chips are very popular overseas,’ another added.

Others wondered whether the new product was just an April Fool’s joke but realised the news broke the day after.

Doritos isn’t the only brand to have unveiled festive crisps ahead of the big day. Marks and Spencer’s recently announced the return of a number of new and old favourites.

Among them, the retailer is offering Butter Basted Roast Turkey crisps, a Cooked Hot Maple Pigs in Blankets addition, and even a bag Hot Maple popcorn.

Similarly combining sweet and savoury crunchy bites, the retailer has released a packet of Milk Chocolate & Cinnamon Tortilla Rolls.

Its new Christmas range also includes  British Ridge Cut Spicy Prawn Cocktail Crisps, Christmas Turkey Feast Combo Mix, and Salt and Vinegar Christmas Stars.
