Bushfire warning issued for NSW South Coast – as extreme fire danger declared across other parts of the state

A dangerous bushfire on the NSW South Coast has been downgraded to a Watch and Act warning after residents were told it was ‘too late to leave’.

Those around Worrowing Heights, 16km east of Shoalhaven, received a frightening alert warning them it was too risky to evacuate on Sunday afternoon.

A bushfire burning out of control north of Sanctuary Point, south of The Wool road and to the west and east of Larmer Avenue, was worsened by hot and windy conditions.

‘If you are in the Worrowing Heights area, you are in danger. It is now too late to leave,’ the warning stated.

‘Seek shelter now inside a solid structure such as a house.’

A reduced Watch and Act alert was issued at 8.12pm advising that while the fire was still out of control, it had been weakened by ongoing efforts from firefighters.

Water bombing aircraft are assisting ground crews.

‘Stay alert and monitor your surroundings,’ NSW Rural Fire Service advised.
