Got a cold? Pharmacist shares the homemade remedy she swear by, and it costs less than £1 to make

Reaching for the lozenges or Vicks could help if you’ve got the flu, but hot honey and lemon or even thyme might be just as good, experts have said.

Winter bugs have surged over the past few weeks leaving millions battling sniffles, coughs, temperatures and chills.

Sadly, the old adage is true: there’s no cure for the common cold. Or flu, for that matter.

But there are some simple methods that will stop you from suffering the worst symptoms and help you feel perkier — and they don’t involve taking medication or shelling out more than £1.

It comes as UK health officials have already sounded the alarm over an early alarming rise in flu cases.

Earlier this month, NHS England chief executive Sir Jim Mackey warned there was ‘no doubt’ this winter will be one of the toughest the health service has ever faced, with hospitals at capacity and patients left to endure long waits.

Sir Jim, who took up the role earlier this year, also said: ‘Since stepping into this role, the thought of a long, drawn-out flu season has kept me awake at night.

‘And, unfortunately, it looks like that fear is becoming reality.’

A hot sweet drink, such as a cup of honey with lemon, is a simple way of relieving the symptoms of a cough and sore throat

According to pharmacist Deborah Grayson, one key remedy involves four simple ingredients including lemon and thyme.

She said: ‘I swear by this mixture as it’s amazing for nasal congestion, as well as sore throats and persistent coughs.

‘You just need sprigs of fresh thyme, half a lemon and some marshmallow root, which you can easily pick up from most health stores.’

To prepare, the pharmacist, who has been dubbed the ‘Godmother of Pharmacology’ on TikTok, advises patients to simmer ten sprigs of fresh thyme with two teaspoons of marshmallow root and half a slice of lemon in 250ml of water.

After 20 minutes, remove the mixture from the heat and let the temperature reduce until it’s warm. Strain out the herbs, then stir in 200 ml of honey.

Allow the mixture to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container, where it can be stored in the fridge for up to four weeks.

The mixture can only be used for ages 12 and up, and only take 5 ml as needed, ensuring at least two hours between doses of any other medications.

Ms Grayson added: ‘Thyme is a powerful natural remedy for nasal congestion and sore throats due to its active compounds, especially thymol, which has both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

‘It works to fight bacteria and viruses while also reducing swelling in the airways, which makes it easier to breathe when nasal passages are blocked.

‘Thyme also works to naturally clear mucus and phlegm from the airways, opening them up and offering relief.

‘Honey and lemon are both rich in antioxidants, which help to boost our immune systems, plus lemon contains vitamin C, which can support white blood cells in fighting infections.

‘Marshmallow root is a superstar ingredient, as this works to coat the throat and create a protective balm.

‘If the discomfort has you struggling to eat, drink, or sleep, this remedy can offer amazing respite.’

Experts have also long advised that sticking to a varied and balanced diet may help speed up recovery from a cold or flu because it can give the body more necessary nutrients.

‘Chicken soup, in particular, has long been associated with helping during illness because chicken is high in vitamin B6, which can reduce inflammation and zinc, by supporting the production of infection-fighting white blood cells.’ Ms Grayson said.

‘Soups are also a great way to increase hydration, which is particularly important when a fever causes fluid loss through sweating.

‘Incorporating a variety of vegetables makes these meals even more powerful in supporting the body during illness.

‘Using a slow cooker makes preparation easier, and any leftovers can be stored in the freezer and reheated later.

Cold season cupboard staples should also include ingredients like frozen vegetables and honey, she added.

‘Dried spices are a simple but effective addition, as they still retain their immune-supporting benefits,’ Ms Grayson said.

‘Frozen vegetables or casserole mixes are also useful, making it easier to prepare healthy meals quickly.

‘Honey is another excellent staple. As well as my cold remedy, it is one of the few evidence-based ingredients in cough remedies and can be simply added to warm water to soothe a sore throat and reduce coughing.

‘Herbal teas can also support the immune system and reduce inflammation. Lemon balm and holy basil (Tulsi) teas are particularly beneficial, as they can help with stress and sleep, which in turn support immunity.

‘These teas also have antimicrobial properties and may help the body manage bacterial, viral and fungal infections.’

Ahead of a predicted dramatic surge in flu cases, UK health officials have also issued a ‘flu jab SOS’, urging people to come forwards for a vaccine to protect against severe illness from the virus.

The annual vaccination programme in England kicked off on October 1, offering vaccines to anyone aged 65 and over, under-65s in clinical risk groups, care home residents and carers and pregnant women.

It is also available to close contacts of those who are immunosuppressed and front-line health and social care workers, as well as children.

People not in these groups can choose to get vaccinated privately at a pharmacy for around £20.

The jab won’t stop you getting infected, but may reduce your risk of severe disease.
