JSW, Shield AI plan $90-m drone manufacturing unit in Hyderabad

JSW Group is investing $90 million (₹809 crore) to manufacture military drones in India in partnership with US-based Shield AI. As part of the pact with the American company, JSW will be producing Shield’s Group 3 unmanned aerial systems- V-BAT-at a new facility in Hyderabad through technology transfer under a long-term licensing arrangement.

The investment would go towards setting up JSW’s global compliance programme, a manufacturing facility to ensure technology licensing, and manpower training, according to a statement. “This investment will enable JSW to establish a local supply chain and create an advanced facility in India for manufacturing, assembling and testing V-BAT,” JSW said. “This effort will enable large-scale production of V-BATs in India to serve the needs of the Indian armed forces and also function as a global production hub.” JSW Defence on Monday began construction of the facility at EMC Maheshwaram, Hyderabad. Production of V-BATs at the unit is expected to begin by the last quarter of 2026, it said.

“Today’s (Tuesday’s) milestone signals a bold new chapter in India’s journey toward self-reliance in next-generation defence technologies,” said Parth Jindal, MD, JSW Cements, who also heads the group’s defence vertical. “Our collaboration with Shield AI reflects our shared ambition to bring mission-critical, globally benchmarked capabilities to India and to build an ecosystem that will define the future of unmanned systems for the nation.” According to Sarjan Shah, Shield AI managing director for India, the upcoming facility underlines the joint vision of JSW and Shield AI to deepen Indo-US defence collaboration.

“JSW’s scale, industrial expertise and commitment to building strategic technologies in India make them an ideal partner for us as we work to expand the global footprint of the V-BAT,” said Shah. Leading companies are increasingly investing in drone manufacturing, underscoring the sector’s strong growth potential.

Companies such as Tata Advanced Systems (TAS), Alpha Design Technologies (ADTL), Paras Defence & Space Technologies, ideaForge, and IG Drones have transitioned from being niche players to critical partners in delivering cutting-edge systems for modern warfare.
