As if we weren’t already amped enough for the next volume of Stranger Things season five, series creators the Duffer Brothers have delivered yet another ultimate tease.

It comes courtesy of an interview the sibling duo, Matt and Ross Duffer, gave for Entertainment Tonight ahead of season five’s next batch of episodes, which will be completely and utterly devoured by this writer upon their release on Christmas Day.

“I don’t even know how one would go about teasing a needle drop,” Matt said when asked if the next instalment would recreate the mammoth success of season four’s “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush moment.
Matt added, “It’s in the finale. It’s never been on a TV show before. I think because of Kate Bush, we were able to get the rights [to the other song]. Under normal circumstances, they would not have allowed us to get those rights, so I think that’s an epic needle drop”.
If you recall, Bush’s 1985 track enjoyed a renewed surge in popularity back in 2022 when it was used during a pivotal Stranger Things season four scene involving Sadie Sink’s Max.
The resurgence of the song was so meteoric that “Running Up That Hill” even charted on home soil in Australia, so it stands to reason that any artist approached by the Duffer brothers for the finale would’ve been eager to snap that opportunity up.
Naturally, the Duffers’ cryptic tease prompted an avalanche of fan theories as to what this all-elusive finale song might be.
Given the time period of the show, some predicted that it could be a track by Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd, or any number of artists who’ve covered the song “Forever Young”.
But the artist gathering the most speculative steam is Prince, because he and his estate have been notoriously cagey about licensing his music for movies and TV shows.

We won’t know for sure which song will either harmonise or terrorise the Upside Down until the finale airs on New Years Day (the ultimate hangover cure), but it isn’t the only morsel we’ve gotten in recent weeks.
Speaking to PEDESTRIAN.TV last month, the Duffers said they are “working on a spinoff” for Stranger Things but stressed it “doesn’t involve any of the characters or Hawkins”.
Elsewhere, fans dissected the cast’s acting chops this season, and prayed, as ever, for their beloved Barb’s return. Oh, we were also left jaw-dropped by *that* mid-season finale, but something tells me that won’t be the only twist of the season.
Watch this space.
