Midnight bomb scare shuts down Bondi street as cops arrest man wearing duct-taped vest

A man is due to face court today after allegedly wearing a vest covered in duct-taped objects in Sydney’s eastern suburbs overnight.

Police were called to Oxford Street, Bondi, at about 10.10pm on Sunday following reports of suspicious behaviour.

Officers spoke with the man, who was allegedly wearing a vest with multiple objects taped to it.

The 33-year-old Victorian man was arrested at the scene and taken to Surry Hills Police Station.

A search of the man’s vehicle allegedly uncovered a second taped vest, a face mask, and a tin believed to contain prohibited drugs.

Both vests were examined by officers from the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit and deemed safe.

The man has been charged with giving false information about a person or property being in danger, possessing a prohibited drug and behaving in an offensive manner in or near a public place or school.

He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before court on Monday.

The man was arrested by officers attached to Operation Shelter, a specialist taskforce established in October 2023 to ensure community safety and reduce antisemitic behaviour, anti-social conduct and other forms of hate crime.

In the wake of the Bondi Beach terror attack, Operation Shelter was bolstered as part of a broader NSW Police counter-terrorism effort targeting violent extremism and threats to public places.
