The Buffalo Bills are promoting Joe Brady to be their new head coach.
Brady served as the offensive coordinator for previous head coach Sean McDermott, who was fired after the divisional round playoff loss to the Denver Broncos.
The Bills announced on Tuesday that the 36-year-old had signed a five-year deal.
It is Brady’s first head coaching position in the NFL and bizarrely comes a week after Bills owner Terry Pegula criticized the existing coaching staff in a staunch defense of general manager Brandon Beane.
Brady has been in Buffalo since 2022 and enjoyed a successful working relationship with franchise quarterback Josh Allen.
He just completed his fourth season in Buffalo, and his second full season as coordinator. He previously served as the Bills’ quarterbacks coach before taking over the offense after Ken Dorsey was fired midway through the 2023 season.

The Bills interviewed several candidates for the position but were hit with some setbacks in their search.
Mike McDaniel canceled a second interview with the organization before confirming his new position as offensive coordinator at the Los Angeles Chargers.
They also interviewed Philip Rivers, who left a good impression before informing the Bills that he’s not yet ready to become a head coach in the NFL.
Former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll was also in the running at the Bills, alongside Indianapolis Colts DC Lou Anarumo, Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver and Washington Commanders run game coordinator Anthony Lynn.
Brady had also spoken twice with Tom Brady’s Las Vegas Raiders about their vacancy. The Bills’ decision leaves just three head coach openings left in the NFL: the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals and Raiders.
Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who was in tears after the Broncos loss, has been involved in the process to find a new head coach.
As well as McDermott’s successor landing the chance to lead Allen into the next stage of his career and, the Bills hope, finally get him that Super Bowl, Brady will also take over at a time when the team is about to open their new stadium.
The 2026 season will see the Bills leave their current Highmark venue and play at a new $2.2billion stadium.
