‘Heartbroken’ Minnesota Vikings pay poignant tribute to Rondale Moore after NFL star’s tragic death at 25

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said he is ‘devastated’ by the loss of Rondale Moore after the receiver’s death aged 25.

The NFL was in mourning on Saturday night after the New Albany, Indiana native passed away.

He was found with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, New Albany police chief Todd Bailey said in a statement.

Shortly after news of Moore’s death was confirmed, O’Connell released a poignant statement. The receiver joined Minnesota last year on a $2million deal but suffered a season-ending knee injury in preseason.

‘I am devastated by the news of Rondale’s death,’ he said. ‘While Rondale had been a member of the Vikings for a short time, he was someone we came to know well and care about deeply.

‘He was a humble, soft-spoken, and respectful young man who was proud of his Indiana roots. As a player, he was disciplined, dedicated and resilient despite facing adversity multiple times as injuries sidelined him throughout his career.

‘We are all heartbroken by the fact he won’t continue to live out his NFL dream and we won’t all have a chance to watch him flourish. My prayers are with Rondale’s family, friends, teammates and coaches as we all deal with this tragic news.’

The Vikings also released a statement in which they said they ‘are deeply saddened by the passing of Rondale Moore.’

The team continued: ‘While we are working to understand the facts, we have spoken with Rondale’s family to offer our condolences and the full support of the Minnesota Vikings.

‘We have also been in communication with our players, coaches, and staff, and will make counseling and emotional support resources available to anyone in need. Our thoughts are with Rondale’s family and friends during this devastating time.’

In its own statement, the NFL said it is ‘deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Rondale Moore. Our thoughts are with Rondale’s family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.’

Police confirmed an investigation is underway into Moore’s death, while the Floyd County Coroner said an autopsy has been scheduled for Sunday.

Moore’s passing is the second sudden death to rock the NFL this season following Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland, who shot himself in the head in after evading Texas police on November 6.
