Richmond player Mykelti Lefau caught drink-driving

Richmond footballer Mykelti Lefau could face a delayed start to the season after returning a blood alcohol reading of more than twice the legal limit while driving at the weekend.

The Tigers confirmed Lefau’s incident, but declined to make a comment to this masthead on Monday morning. They will address the incident in a statement later in the day.

Victoria Police told this masthead that Prahran police performed a random breath test on a 27-year-old male driver on Wattletree Rd in Malvern East about 3am on Sunday.

The Surrey Hills man returned a positive preliminary test before returning an alleged evidentiary reading of 0.108.

Police said the driver was expected to be issued with an infringement notice for drink-driving, and a fine and loss of licence will occur at that time.

Lefau, who is out of contract at the end of the 2026 season, played just once at AFL level last year after recovering from a season-ending ACL rupture in his right knee against Geelong in mid-2024 before a calf setback sidelined him again.

But the 11-gamer, a pre-season selection ahead of the 2024 season, had made a promising start to the pre-season, including kicking three goals for Richmond in match simulation against Essendon on Friday.

Players caught drink-driving typically receive club-imposed multi-game suspensions and fines, and are ordered to undergo counselling.
