Villanova coach Kevin Willard threatens to fire staff at March Madness in astonishing moment before shock defeat to Utah State

Villanova head coach Kevin Willard sensationally threatened to fire his staff on live TV before they suffered a shock defeat to Utah State at March Madness.

The No. 8 Wildcats started slow in their first-round matchup on Friday night, with the No. 9 Aggies outscoring them 16-2 in the paint at the time of Willard’s explosive interview.

TNT sideline reporter Lauren Shehadi then asked him how he plans to stop Utah State’s attack with his team trailing 22-16 in the first half.

‘I’m gonna fire my staff,’ Willard said bluntly in a moment which has gone viral.

A stunned Shehadi replied: ‘Not now!’

‘Yeah, I am,’ the Wildcats coach insisted. ‘Because we’ve given up eight points on underneath out-of-bounds defense. The only thing I’m gonna do is fire them and get a new staff.’

While Willard was likely joking at the time, that may no longer be the case after Villanova were dumped out of March Madness by Utah State in San Diego.

After heading in at the interval leading 39-37, the Wildcats’ defense was obliterated in the second half, with the Aggies earning a famous 86-76 victory.

Willard is in his first season at Villanova after leaving Maryland last year, a move which sparked a major backlash at the time.

He led his new team to a 24-8 record in the regular season and Big East tournament before their nightmare loss to Utah State.

Friday’s game marked Villanova’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2022, when Jay Wright led the program to the Final Four before retiring.
