Which star’s hair is real and who is faking it with extensions? Experts reveal who has the most natural locks in Hollywood

For A-listers cursed with thinning hair, extensions can discretely offer volume and length for red carpet events and public appearances.

Yet poor maintenance and over wearing extensions can cause long-term damage, leading some celebrities to ditch them altogether.

Adele, famous for her bouncy blow dry look, has declared that her voluminous hair is ‘all mine’, while Pamela Anderson now prefers her ‘own hair’ over extensions, and says she has genetics, diet and a good haircare routine to thank for her ‘thick and healthy’ locks.

Yet for others, hair extensions remain essential to bouffant red carpet locks, especially in mid life when hair naturally starts to thin.

Hairdresser Andrew Barton, from The Hair Expert, told The Daily Mail: ‘The reality is, not everyone can grow their hair super long – most hair has a lifespan of around five to seven years – so extensions are an easy, effective way to create that look instantly.

‘But when someone has naturally thick, glossy hair, it can give the illusion of extensions without actually using them at all.’

So, as hair extensions become increasingly undetectable, can you tell which A-listers are using them?

Read on to discover which public figures are subtly tweaking their hair, and who may have naturally more voluminous locks…

1. Adele

Famous for her bouncy blow dry and 60s-inspired volume, Adele’s gorgeous tresses give many serious envy and has also become a staple part of her public image. Yet, during an appearance on Saturday Night Live in October 2020, she declared: ‘This is all mine by the way’

Famous for her bouncy blow dry and 60s-inspired volume, Adele’s gorgeous tresses give many serious envy and has also become a staple part of her public image.

Yet while it may appear that the singer relies upon hair extensions to achieve her incredible look, Adele, 37, has previously insisted her locks are more natural.

While debuting a longer, blonde hair look during an appearance on Saturday Night Live in October 2020, she proudly told the camera: ‘This is all mine by the way’.

According to celebrity hair stylist Gustav Fouche, Adele has ‘naturally good, strong hair’ and ‘may not’ need extensions in situations where her hair is worn up.

However, he added that while Adele may not use extensions, he would be surprised if she uses ‘no enhancements at all when her hair is worn down, especially as lighter, bleached hair can become thinner over time’.

2. Pamela Anderson

Pamela Anderson, 58, has often chosen to embrace the more natural look and has declared that in her 50s, her hair is 'healthier than it's ever been'

At one stage, former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson was a firm fan of hair extensions as a way of making her popular blonde locks appear thicker and longer.

However, while the star, 58, previously sported visible bonds on the red carpet, she has since chosen to embrace the more natural look and has declared that in her 50s, her hair is ‘healthier than it’s ever been’.

She told InStyle: ‘I can’t believe I have one hair on my head after all those years of hot rollers, setting my hair, and crazy photo shoots I did with all the hair extensions.

‘I just prefer my own hair, and it’s healthier than it’s ever been. My routine has just become simpler and simpler,’ she said, and added that she now often opts to wear her hair ‘the way it dries after shampooing, conditioning, and letting it dry overnight.’

She added that her ‘thick and healthy’ hair are likely down to ‘genetics and diet’ alongside her ‘great’ haircare routine to create smooth and silky locks.

At the 2026 Oscars, Gwyneth Paltrow turned heads in a daring look which comprised of a white gown with sheer slits on both sides.

But eagle-eyed onlookers may have noted a more subtle aspect to her glamour for the annual awards show: her luscious and expansive blonde hair.

So, how exactly did the American actress achieve this? According to celebrity hair stylist Owen Gould, he carefully placed extensions by BHBD and invisible tape-in extensions were used to create a seamless look that enhanced length and fulness.

He told Respect Magazine: ‘This combination created a seamless colour match while adding the perfect amount of volume and length for a polished, elevated finish.’

Despite undergoing significant hair loss following her brain surgery in November 2024, Davina has often intentionally chosen to embrace her natural locks and showcase glamorous updos, rather than necessarily lean into extensions.

Her hairstylist, who also happens to be her partner, Michael Douglas, previously revealed to The Independent that Davina’s glorious hair is best achieved by using the OGC Biotin & Collagen Volumising and Thickening Shampoo.

The television star also only washes her hair once a week and avoids using excess heat on her head.

However, while Davina may appear to avoid using extensions, she is known to have started wearing wigs to help accentuate her natural head of hair.

Gustav explained: ‘She may not use traditional extensions, but she absolutely has support in her hair, and her hairstylist has shown this openly. It’s a good example of how ‘not using extensions’ doesn’t necessarily mean no added hair at all.’

5. Nicole Kidman

In recent years, Nicole Kidman has sported a number of varying hair looks – from slick pixie cuts to long beachy waves.

At the 2026 Oscars, Nicole opted for extensive Bellami hair extensions to achieve her gorgeous blowout, with hairstylist Adir Abergel using 18-inch Silk Seam clip-ins to achieve a seemingly natural look.

He told The Tease: ‘The inspiration for Nicole’s look was the iconic blowout from Moulin Rouge — with extra volume, length, bounce and shine. We wanted to create an extra long voluminous blowout with cascading layers framing the face with middle parted bangs.’

Meanwhile, on previous occasions, Nicole has used clip-in ponytails to eventuate her elaborate up-dos.

While Jennifer Aniston was previously a firm fan of extensions, the Friends actress has been open about how her hair became ‘thinned out’ from over usage.

She told MSNBC: ‘The real reason I cut my hair? My real hair was getting thinned out again from all the extensions. It was starting to look fake.’

Likewise, speaking to InStyle, she added: ‘My hair has gone through many phases since I started in this business. It has to endure a lot of wear and tear, including blow-drying, flat ironing, curlers, straightening, and extensions, which is just endless.’

Now, while the star has publicly spoken about the re-use of extensions while shooting The Morning Show, Jennifer certainly appears unafraid to embrace her natural locks.

Indeed, in 2021, she even launched her own haircare line, LolaVie, in a bid to help others achieve the famous Rachel blowout without the use of extensions.

Long a source of inspiration for glossy brown locks, J Lo uses hair extensions to shift between lobs, chic ponytails and waist-length voluminous looks.

According to Harpers Bazaar, Jennifer is fond of using Great Lengths keratin bond extensions for a seamless blend, particularly while stepping out on the red carpet.

Guastav explained: ‘Jennifer Lopez is well known for using a variety of extension methods (clip-ins, tapes, half wigs) mainly because her natural hair is very fine, so she uses extensions to build volume and body.’

Bella Hadid is certainly no stranger to hair extensions and has often collaborated with celebrity hairstylist Evanie Frausto to create bold and impeccable hairstyles.

In 2019, the model opted for curly hair extensions at Dior Men’s Show in Miami, while the entrepreneur and influencer has also opted for a braided look and lengthening hair assistance in the past.

Perhaps her most notable hair extension look, however, was in 2022, when she took to Instagram to share images of her rocking a retro look comprising of a white and blue shirt, skirt and trainers.

The star of the show, however, was her lengthy black hair extensions that travelled past her feet and along the floor, drawing comparisons to Cher’s 1970s hair look.

So, how does one spot carefully hidden celebrity hair extensions? According to Andrew, ‘the biggest sign is length that feels almost too good to be true’.

He told The Daily Mail: ‘If hair is extremely long, thick all the way through the ends, that’s usually a hint, as natural hair typically loses density as it grows’.

Alongside ‘consistently polished “done” hair’, Andrew noted that ‘blending is where it really shows’.

‘If the colour match is slightly off or the texture doesn’t move seamlessly, it becomes noticeable — even with high-end extensions,’ he added.

‘That said, some celebrities truly don’t need them. Genetics play a huge role in hair density, strength and how long it can grow, and when you combine that with good nutrition and overall health, you can achieve incredible length and fullness naturally.’
