Alex Cooper’s former assistant soccer coach has responded after the podcaster opened up about the alleged sexual abuse she suffered during her time at Boston University.
ICYMI, Cooper is the subject of a docuseries titled Call Her Alex, which premiered last week and sees her accuse Nancy Feldman, a former soccer coach at Boston University, of sexual harassment while she played on the school’s the soccer team from 2013 to 2015.
While Feldman is the main subject of Cooper’s allegations — including claims of inappropriate touching and comments about her body — the university’s former assistant coach, Casey Brown, was also accused of ignoring Cooper’s pleas for help.
Speaking of Brown’s alleged involvement in a recent interview with The Boston Globe, Cooper recalled being called into an office for a meeting with both Feldman and Brown after contracting glandular fever during her sophomore year.
While multiple teammates had also been infected, Cooper claimed she was the only one who was made to answer questions by the coaches about how she contracted the infection.
Per The Boston Globe, Cooper said she “locked eyes” with Brown during that meeting and pleaded, “Casey, help me”, but that Brown instead turned away and “did nothing about it”.
Now, Brown has responded to the claims, saying in a statement that she has “no recollection of what has been suggested” by Cooper.
“But let me be absolutely clear: I would never ignore, dismiss or turn away from anyone — a player, a teammate, a friend, a family member — who sought my help in any capacity,” Brown told The Boston Globe.
“As a coach, I understood the weight of my responsibility to protect my players and act accordingly,” she added.
“The suggestion that I would do otherwise is completely false.”
It comes after Cooper mentioned Brown in a follow-up message shared on social media on Friday, with the podcaster claiming she had “found out the harassment and abuse was still happening on that campus” by “Nancy Feldman’s successor and my former assistant coach”.
Meanwhile, Boston University on Friday released its own statement in response to the claims made in Call Her Alex, telling People that it has “a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment and “encourage[s] members of our community to report any concerns”.
“We remain committed to fostering a safe and secure campus environment for all”, the statement read.
Cooper alleged that athletic officials at Boston University did not take action when Feldman’s alleged behaviour was brought to their attention, even when provided with written documentation of her interactions with Cooper.
Feldman — who retired from her soccer coach role in 2022 — has yet to respond to Cooper’s claims.
