Asbestos sand crisis worsens with a fresh recall issued for another contaminated product

Yet another popular children’s sand kit sand kit has been urgently recalled amid fears it may contain asbestos.

The MIKI Sand Art Set, sold at hundreds of pharmacies across the country, was recalled on Monday.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission explained in the recall notice that asbestos was found in samples of the coloured sand after laboratory analysis.

‘The products may cause a risk to health as initial testing found unidentified mineral fibres that were consistent with tremolite – type asbestos,’ the ACCC’s notice read.

The set, distributed through Sax International, includes 12 sand colours, 12 card designs, one tray and a shaping tool.

Affected sets include those sold between July 24, 2023 to November 20, 2025.

The ACCC has urged consumers to immediately stop using the product and to store it out of reach of children in a manner that was safe, like in a tied up bag.

Guidelines for disposing of products that are contaminated with asbestos can be found on the ACCC’s website

The toy can be returned to the point of purchase for a full refund.

It comes just weeks after Kmart and Target pulled four types of decorative sand from its shelves over fears the items contained asbestos.

The 14-piece Sand Castle Building Set, sold at Kmart and Target stores and online, was recalled earlier this month after laboratory analysis detected the hazardous substance in some samples of its coloured sand.

The kit, which is available in clear, blue, green and pink containers, was widely used for sensory play and beach activities.
