Aussie F1 Driver Oscar Piastri Leads 2025 Driver’s Championship

Australian Formula One driver Oscar Piastri is currently leading the driver’s championship in the 2025 season following his win at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The race kicked off at 3am Monday morning (local time), and from the very start, the McLaren young gun was in it to win it. The moment the checkered flag was waved, Piastri put up a fight against 2024 champion Max Verstappen.

During one spicy turn, Verstappen cut the chicane (the sharp arrows on the track that drivers aren’t meant to drive over), prompting a five-second penalty, which ultimately saw the 24-year-old Aussie land first place.

After winning the Bahrain Grand Prix last week, Piastri has become the first back-to-back Grand Prix winner of the season.

With three wins out of five under his belt so far, Piastri has now found himself leading the coveted driver’s championship, making him the first Australian in 15 years to be in the lead of the F1 season.

Fun fact — the last time this happened was in 2010 by Piastri’s own manager, Mark Webber!

Naturally, Oscar is pretty jazzed with the result.

“It was a pretty tough race,” said Piastri.

“Still need a bit more, I think, Max was a little bit too close for our liking but a great race and a great weekend.”

As it stands, Piastri now has 99 points. His McLaren teammate Lando Norris has 89 and Verstappen has 87.

The next race will be in Miami on May 4.
