BBC & BritBox’s ‘Riot Women’ Reveals Trailer & More Images

Sally Wainwright‘s BBC and BritBox drama Riot Women now has a trailer and more images ahead of its launch this October, which you can see below.

The six-part series, set and filmed in Hebden Bridge in England’s Yorkshire, follows five menopausal women who form a punk rock band to take part in a local talent contest and find they have more to shoot about than they imagined.

ananaananis (After Love, The Thick of It), Rosalie Craig (Moonflower Murders, Serpent Queen), Tamsin Greig (Sexy Beast, The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin), Lorraine Ashbourne (Sherwood, Alma’s Not Normal) and Amelia Bullmore (The Buccaneers, Vienna Blood) star as the five women, with Taj Atwal (Line of Duty), Chandeep Uppal (Holby City), and May Seelochan (Shadow and Bone) as the band’s riotous backing singers.

Further cast includes Anne Reid, Sue Johnston, Peter Davison, Claire Skinner, Angel Coulby, Jonny Green, Ellise Chappell, Tony Hirst , Shannon Lavelle, Mark Bazeley, Amit Shah, Rick Warden, Ben Batt, Natalia Tena, Melanie La Barrie, Oliver Huntingdon, Richard Fleeshman, Olwen May, Kevin Doyle, Nicholas Gleaves and Thomas Flynn.

In the trailer, we see Scanlan’s character Beth saying, “Do you think we’re living in an alternative universe, where women of a certain age become invisible?” A series of scenes outlining the issues they face – cheating husbands, difficult parents and ungrateful children – follow, before Scanlan answers a call from Ashbourne’s Jess, who asks, “Do you want to be in my rock band?”

The series features original songs from Brighton punk duo ARXX. Wainwright is the writer, creator, exec producer and lead director. Jessica Taylor is the producer, and Roanna Benn is EP for Drama Republic, with Tanya Qureshi the same for the BBC, and Robert Schildhouse and Jess O’Riordan for BritBox. Mediawan-owned UK producer Drama Republic.

In the UK, the series will roll out on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, while in Canada and the U.S., it will stream on BritBox. Mediawan Rights will distribute the series internationally with the participation of Entourage Ventures.

The trailer dropped on the first day of the Edinburgh TV Festival in Scotland, where the likes of Michael Sheen and Jane Tranter will appear today in front of the great and good of the British television biz.
