Network 10’s reboot of Big Brother Australia has kicked off with a bang, with a mix of 13 characters officially entering the Dreamworld house.

And although we’re only in Week One of the reality TV shebang, tensions are beginning to flare amongst the housemates.

In a snippet, which has since gone gangbusters on Big Brother Australia‘s social media, Victoria-based Bunnings employee Mia got caught in a heated discussion about gender roles with Queensland-based tradie Bruce, and NSW publisher, Michael.

To give you a quick recap of the viral conversation, Bruce and Michael expressed that traditional gender roles — where men are seen as providers and women are seen as homemakers — “just works” for them despite gender roles changing nowadays.

“People hate it, but it just works. Nowadays, you introduce all this other bullshit,” Bruce said.

Mia then chimed in, explaining that these traditional roles take away women’s choices.

“I don’t think then it’s really giving someone a choice, then, ‘cos you’re already having that expectation they should do that,” Mia responded.

Bruce then rebutted, bringing up “caveman days” and how “women stay there, all protect the kids, the guys go out and hunt animals”.

In response, Mia pointed out that this mindset sets women up to fail — both as homemakers and in the workforce — which riled both Bruce and Michael up.

“But women are kind of — they’re set up to fail. Even without kids, they’re going to — there are discrepancies between how much they make in terms of, you know, versus a man,” Mia said before Bruce described her perspective as the “biggest load of bullshit” he’s ever heard.

The topic then moved on to the gender pay gap, brought up by Mia, which combusted into an absolute shit-show where Bruce and Michael both admitted that they didn’t believe it was real.

“You go get a job, you’re starting at the same. If you work hard and bump up, you’re going to get paid more. It’s got nothing to do with gender,” Bruce said before Michael added, “Men are more aggressive, so we do tend to get into managerial roles, just ’cause we’re more competitive by nature”.

At one point, Michael used sports as an example, explaining that female rugby league athletes have a better chance than male athletes because there are fewer players in the league to compete with, to which Mia shut down, explaining there were “less opportunities for women” to progress as elite players.

Speaking in the Diary Room, Mia explained how she felt about the conversation as well as their views.

“I think they come from a place of privilege and power that I, a woman, haven’t had in my life. So there’s just a lot that they don’t understand yet, and I’m going to have to just really try and explain it to them, but I can only say so much if they’re not receptive,” she explained.

The snippet then cut to Michael and Bruce speaking amongst themselves, with the publisher telling the tradie, “Love Mia trying to push our buttons before”.

Fans and reality TV stars rally behind Big Brother Australia‘s Mia after gender roles chat

Shortly after Big Brother Australia shared the polarising conversation on Instagram, many users rallied behind Mia, praising the retail worker for the way she handled the heated discussion.

“Mia’s patience during this conversation should be awarded. Merely sitting through it and not walking away laughing is her charity work for the week,” Big Brother Australia star Tully Smyth commented on Instagram.

“Mia shouldn’t have to be doing this work, but thank god she is,” Mia shouldn’t have to be doing this work, but thank god she is,” reality TV icon, Angie Kent, penned.

“Mia just won Big Brother,” another fan commented.

Reactions to the conversation were similar on TikTok, with fans complementing Mia’s composure while speaking to Bruce and Michael.

“They don’t listen to understand, they only listen to respond. They have no intention of hearing a different perspective,” a TikTok user wrote.

“I’m not watching BB, but this queen held herself and slayed!” another commented.

“‘It just works’. No, it just works for you,” wrote a third.

Again, we’re only Week One into this reboot, and it’s already got the public buzzing. It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of this season pans out, especially with the addition of Jane, who claimed to be a “passionate” Donald Trump fan.
