Big Brother Fans Rally Around Abiola After ‘Pretty Privilege’ Debate: ‘Broke My Heart’

Last night’s Big Brother Australia episode has sparked a discussion about pretty privilege after Holly and Abiola‘s heated debate.

ICYMI: in the episode, Holly poo-pooed the idea of “pretty privilege”, aka the idea that conventionally attractive people get by easier in life, saying she doesn’t believe in it “at all”.
“Yes there are privileges that come with being beautiful, but pretty privilege — I always say this is a double-edged sword,” she said.
“There’s pros and there’s cons, like I get social anxiety, you wouldn’t think that, but sometimes when a beautiful girl walks into a room, sometimes we don’t want to even be noticed.”

Holly reckoned she cops way too much attention in public, even when she’s “dressed down”.
But Melbourne muso Abiola wasn’t having it.
“Yeah, but I’d rather that than people not give me the time of day because they think I’m gross,” she fired back.
Holly tried to explain herself, but Abiola wasn’t letting it slide.
“You guys live an easier life,” she added.
“People don’t think you’re disgusting, do you know what I’m saying?” Abiola asked Holly.
“I can’t relate to that, but people have called me stuck up,” Holly continued.
“I’d rather be called stuck-up, sexualised, than people think I’m gross and not give me the time of day,” Abiola said.
Big Brother Australia viewers have shared their thoughts on the emotional scene via social media and it seems people are quite divided.
“Pretty privilege is a thing. There have been studies on it,” one person pointed out, while another pointed to Holly’s blunder: “I loved Holly‘s ‘I don’t believe in pretty privilege at all… yes there are privileges that come with being beautiful’ IN THE SAME SENTENCE”.
“I think Holly means well but she’s a bit clueless because everyone she hangs out with in real life is the same as her,” wrote another.
“Love Abiola!!! I agree with her that fatphobia especially for her as a Black lesbian is NOT comparable to being compared with some of the downsides of pretty privilege,” another shared.
“This broke my heart. We need to protect Abs, Mia, Coco and Allana, what absolute gems,” a supportive commenter added.
“I can even see that Vinnie is so much more than good looks too and is a really good guy inside. Holly NEEDS to go, along with Michael, Jane, Bruce and Edward.”
Meanwhile, other people were just pleased that such an important and relatable topic was being discussed on reality telly.
“These are the conversations we want to see,” someone wrote on Insta.
Will Holly’s out of touch comments put her on the evictions list, or will her villain status prolong her stay in the house? We shall see!
Big Brother Australia continues on Sunday at 7pm on Channel 10.
