Bills fans rip ‘insane’ move to promote GM, Sean McDermott’s firing… and owner’s embarrassing ‘admiral’ typo

Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula’s statement on the firing of head coach Sean McDermott infuriated fans on a number of fronts, starting with a copy-editing mistake.
‘SPELLING ERROR IN THE FIRST SENTENCE,’ one fan noticed on X. ‘AMAZING ATTENTION TO DETAIL.’
Pegula’s statement claimed McDermott did ‘an admiral job of leading our football team,’ rather than an ‘admirable job,’ prompting several X users to post AI-generated images of the fired coach in a naval officer’s hat and uniform.
But not everyone in Western, New York is so fastidious about spelling and grammar. Many others were more concerned with the Bills’ roster, which is facing a salary-cap crunch in 2026 thanks thanks to $32 million in dead contracts. But the biggest issue may be on defense, where edge rushers Joey Bosa and A.J. Epenesa are both unrestricted free agents, as are linebackers Matt Milano and Shaq Thompson.
‘Fired the wrong guy,’ one fan wrote.
‘Beane getting a promotion is absolute malpractice,’ another added. ‘Insane to read.’

Others shared their displeasure with Beane’s draft history, which has failed to provide quarterback Josh Allen with an elite receiver.
That’s not to say Beane has been horrible in the draft. Defensive end Greg Rousseau, running back James Cook, cornerback Taron Johnson, defensive tackle Ed Oliver and Allen himself are all credits to Beane’s scouting department and his own decision making.
However, picks like second rounders Keon Coleman, Carlos Basham and Cody Ford never hit their stride in Buffalo, while Beane finally bailed on former first-round Kaiir Elam, trading the cornerback to the Dallas Cowboys last year.
‘News flash – You ain’t going anywhere with Beane,’ one critic added.
‘It should have been Brandon Beane,’ another wrote on X. ‘[He] has consistently refused to draft or sign what we need, especially on offense. Bargain Bin Beane should have been fired. Sean had 8 out of 9 winning seasons, 98-50 winning record, 5 straight AFC East titles.’

Beane is also taking criticism for trading down in the 2024 NFL Draft and allowing the rival Kansas City Chiefs to move up and take deep-threat receiver Xavier Worthy out of Texas with the 28th pick.
‘[Beane] is responsible for salary cap embarrassment and sub par roster of WRs and d line keeps his job,’ one critic wrote on X. ‘Same GM in 2024 draft that let KC trade ahead of them and draft a WR the bills desperately needed… Yeah smart.’
As for the Bills’ coaching vacancy, there are no shortage of candidates.
Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak springs to mind after helping Seattle secure the first seed in the NFC playoffs with a new quarterback, Sam Darnold. Another candidate could be fired New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll, who previously worked with Allen as the Bills offensive coordinator.
Another name to keep an eye on is Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, who happens to be the younger brother of Green Bay Packers coach, Mike.
The question is whether or not there is a good fit for Buffalo, which still boasts the reigning MVP in Allen as the team heads into its new state-of-the-art stadium in Orchard Park next season.
