Busy Philipps Says Kevin Williams Apologized For Writing Her Out Of ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Finale

More than 20 years later, Busy Philipps recently got some long-overdue closure about her Dawson’s Creek character Audrey.

The actress recently noted that the WB show’s creator Kevin Williamson apologized at the September cast reunion for writing her out of the 2003 series finale after she joined the drama in the penultimate fifth season.

“What I heard at the time was Kevin was like, ‘I don’t know this character. I didn’t create her, so she’s not going to be in the finale,’” she said on the Pod Meets World podcast, noting that Williamson returned to write the two-hour finale after leaving the show ahead of Season 3.

“It was a thing that really hurt my feelings and I felt like I had given two seasons of my life to this show,” explained Philipps. “People really loved my character. I really gave up a big part of my life to be in Wilmington.”

As she reunited with Williamson and her co-stars for a table read benefitting James Van Der Beek amid his cancer battle, Philipps revealed that the Scream 7 co-writer/director apologized for excluding her.

“He was just like, ‘I was just in a moment in my career, my life, when like I had so many things going on. They had asked me at the very last minute to come back and write the finale. I had like a day and a half to do it, and I just made this kind of weird decision and I could have done better and I didn’t, and I’m sorry,’” said Philipps.

After premiering in 1998, Dawson’s Creek ran for six seasons on The WB, airing its two-hour finale in May 2003.
