Charli xcx Refuses To Discuss Taylor Swift’s Diss Track, But Did Address *Those* Rumours

After a brief period of silence, Charli xcx has seemingly come out in full force following Taylor Swift‘s viral diss track “Actually Romantic” from her spicy new album The Life of a Showgirl.

In her new interview for Vanity Fair — for which she graces the cover — the singer was asked to comment on the track but declined. However, she did discuss the song that started it all: “Sympathy is a knife”.

ICYMI: in the brat song, which tipped people off to the fact that the ladies had beef, Charli, who is now married to The 1975’s George Daniel, sang about being insecure around a successful woman who’s dating another band member.

She sings: “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show / Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick”, an obvious nod to the fact that Taylor briefly dated lead singer Matty Healy in 2023.

During the Vanity Fair interview, Charli looked back on how she responded to questions New York Magazine asked about “Sympathy is a knife” for her August 2024 cover story.

In last year’s interview, Charli rejected fan theories that the song was about Taylor: “People are gonna think what they want to think,” she said. “That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don’t want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt.”

When the interviewer asked if she had considered withholding the breakup lyric which gives away that it’s about Tay Tay, Charli simply responded: “No”.

The writer remained silent, and Charli sassily said: “You do the silence game. But I know that well — where you go silent and want me to talk more. But I don’t care about it being awkward. We’ll sit in silence.”

In the Vanity Fair story, the writer pointed out that Charli was more open with the subject, as she replied: “I think I’m just quite direct and blunt. I hate this phrase, but what you see is what you get with me. People think it’s all some kind of performance, but it’s not. I’m not sat here talking to you being the way that I am onstage.

“But I think there is a correlation in that there’s a messiness and a lack of perfection. It’s the combination of talking about those things whilst also embracing them and really struggling with them is what makes me whole. And I think that it makes me honest. You can vouch for me, I hope… Or I’m a psychopath.”

She went on to discuss the public’s misconceptions about her, saying: “If enough people say that it is true on the internet, it becomes the truth”.

She added, “You can’t [correct the record without making the rumour bigger]. Fact-checking is dead”.

Charli admitted that she reads all the media coverage of her and is somewhat perplexed by how publications like the Daily Mail misinterpret her sentiment.

“I have a big mouth, and I say shit and sometimes it gets me in trouble,” she said. “You seem lovely. But were you trying to get me on your side, so I would reveal more? I don’t know.”

As for online discourse surrounding her public persona, she had this to say (note the drug reference which you’ll also find in Taylor Swift’s “Actually Romantic”): “It’s fascinating to see how people ingest your personality and spit it back out — what people cling on to, what people miss. I’m always interested in, like, what does the casual viewer think? And they probably think I’m a girl who parties and does drugs and is a little bit bitchy”.

Iiiiiiinteresting! You can catch the full interview here.

It comes after Charli xcx appeared on SNL over the weekend wearing a shirt that read: “Max’s Kansas City”, and since Taylor’s fiancé Travis Kelce plays for the NFL team the Kansas City Chiefs, fans interpreted this as a response to “Actually Romantic”.

Have a watch below:

She also recently let fans know that she’s back in the studio working on new music, so we may get a musical reaction to Taylor’s serve in the future. One can only hope!
