Chelsea vs Benfica live: Latest team news and updates from Club World Cup

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has high hopes for new recruit Liam Delap

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has no doubt Liam Delap is going to be a huge success at the club.

Delap scored his first goal since his £30m move from Ipswich as Chelsea beat Esperance Tunis 3-0 in Philadelphia to reach the last 16 of the Club World Cup.

With fellow forward Nicolas Jackson still suspended for today’s clash with Benfica in the second round, the 22-year-old has a chance to cement his place in the side.

Maresca told reporters: “We know Liam is going to score goals for us, we don’t have any doubts about that.”

Delap eager for his goal to be ‘the first of many’

Liam Delap hopes there are plenty more goals to come after scoring his first for Chelsea to help them into the last 16 of the Club World Cup.

The former Ipswich striker was on target as the Blues beat Esperance Tunis 3-0 in Philadelphia to secure the runners-up spot in Group D.

Delap told the club’s website, chelseafc.com: “Obviously it is a really happy feeling and hopefully it is the first of many.

“I spoke to Enzo (Maresca) and he told me when he gets the ball to just run. It was a great pass and luckily it went in.

“I love playing football and to play for such a good team is a great feeling.

“We had to win to get through and we are all happy we are into the next stage.”

Thomas Muller rejects complaints over heat at Club World Cup: ‘No excuses’

Thomas Muller has rejected complaints of “impossible” heat at the Club World Cup, citing his own age as a reason why younger players should have “no excuses”.

The temperature reached 36°C for the clash at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, harsh conditions that were reflected by the far from optimum performances on the pitch from both sides.

However, Muller has hit back at claims that his team should be excused for their shortcomings.

Liam Delap scores first Chelsea goal as Blues progress to last 16

Liam Delap scored his first Chelsea goal as the Premier League side reached the last 16 of the Club World Cup with a 3-0 win over Esperance Tunis.

The former Ipswich forward struck just moments after defender Tosin Adarabioyo had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time of their final Group D game in Philadelphia.

Tyrique George scored a third in time added on at the end of the game after Chelsea had a penalty awarded for handball overturned by VAR.

The result means the Londoners will now face Benfica – surprise winners of Group C ahead of Bayern Munich – in the next round in Charlotte on Saturday.
